About this audiobook
From bestselling author Kim Wozencraft comes the story of a young mother at war on two fronts: first as a soldier in Afghanistan and then upon her return to rural Granite County, New York, where one terrible mistake threatens her family and her sanity. Erin Hill enlists in the Army Reserve in an act of desperation. She and her husband have both lost their jobs and their marriage is disintegrating. Assured that the odds of deployment are extremely low, Erin now finds herself on an Army base in the middle of a combat zone, where it’s sometimes hard to tell who the enemy is—especially when a respected sergeant turns predator. When Erin returns stateside and reunites with her family, her battle for survival truly begins. Flooded with traumatic memories, with no prospects for jobs or treatment for PTSD, her husband involved with a new woman, Erin falls into the bottle head-first. After a nearly fatal night of despair, she is swept up into a vast and indifferent bureaucracy that threatens to take her children from her—forever. Neglect is a profound story of mother love.
Editor's Note
Fairy-tales, not dreams…
The mythos of individualism and pulling yourself up by your bootstraps permeates inspiring American Dream stories. Wozencraft shows how this is a fairy-tale instead of a dream in her affecting novel about a modern mother — an Afghanistan war veteran — who does everything she can to protect her family. Still, the safety net quickly unravels.

Wozencraft holds an MFA from Columbia University and lives in the Hudson Valley region of New York.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5The beginning of this story in audiobook form was hard to follow at 1st, but it got better.
I can relate to a lot of this story and at times it angered me.
From experience with DFS with my niece and nephew, they can be good and bad depending on the social worker and the judge.
Also, it points to the lack of support for wartime vets, though the VA medical has gotten better in recent years, as I am Vet.
The main character needed help, but was just put through the wringer without getting the proper help and the husband getting away with lies and illegal activities. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Oh actually I wouldn't say I loved it because it was all very hard but it was very real and it talked about stuff that we should all pay much more attention to.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Sorry, it is not my cup of tea, the swearing was just too much.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This ended up being long winded. I did enjoy it mostly. I did appreciate the authors ability to highlight just how corrupt and disgusting DFS is. This story is not unique to this book. This happens every day.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The effects of 'logical bureaucracy' with no regard for consequences, emotions, long term after effects and people. This book sums it all up so so beautifully. Even though I am not a mother, i find myself gritting my teeth and almost crying at the idiocy of the so called 'system'. America is really fucked up when it comes to children, healthcare, support from the govt. I would definitely recommend this book to everyone, especially to people who think mothers aren't held up to a much much much much higher standard than dads.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This is a good story, but it does NOT work as an audiobook! Too much jumping in time makes it confusing and is therefore hard to follow.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A very good book and an author who pays great attention to detail. Well worth reading.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I found it too depressing of a read. Though the writing was good quality.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5This could have been a good book but it really isn't realistic.
Just to many twists and turns to make it believable. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I really FELT this book. Can't wait to see more from this author.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5This is obviously someone who is writing about something they don’t know. I would give zero stars but it isn’t an option.
