About this audiobook

*The spectacular sequel to Audie Award Audiobook of the Year Children of Blood and Bone*

A GOOD MORNING AMERICA BOOK CLUB PICK

"
Bahni Turpin exquisitely narrates the second book in this fantasy series, Legacy of Orïsha. Her steady pace and West African accent draw us into the story of Zélie, a Maji warrior, and Princess Amari--both of whom fight against a monarchy that threatens to destroy the people of Orïsha...A riveting audiobook!" — AudioFile Magazine, Earphones Award winner

After battling the impossible, Zélie and Amari have finally succeeded in bringing magic back to the land of Orïsha. But the ritual was more powerful than they could’ve imagined, reigniting the powers of not only the maji, but of nobles with magic ancestry, too.

Now, Zélie struggles to unite the maji in an Orïsha where the enemy is just as powerful as they are. But when the monarchy and military unite to keep control of Orïsha, Zélie must fight to secure Amari's right to the throne and protect the new maji from the monarchy's wrath.

With civil war looming on the horizon, Zélie finds herself at a breaking point: she must discover a way to bring the kingdom together or watch as Orïsha tears itself apart.

Children of Virtue and Vengeance is the stunning sequel to Tomi Adeyemi's New York Times-bestselling debut Children of Blood and Bone, the first audiobook in the Legacy of Orïsha trilogy.

Praise for Children of Blood and Bone:

"[Narrator Bahni Turpin] excels at customizing her voice to capture the unique personalities of each character.... This excellent, refreshing performance of Adeyemi's exciting debut is recommended for all collections where fantasy is popular." -Booklist

What our readers think

Readers find this title engaging, electromagnetic, and powerful. It is an emotional rollercoaster that keeps readers enchanted and ready for the next part of the story. The audiobook is captivating, beautifully read, and pulls readers in. The complexity of revolutions and the splendor of the magic of Oriisha are portrayed well. However, some readers found the interpretation of the African accent to be the worst they have ever heard. Overall, this book is well-written, riveting, and has a shocking ending.

I really enjoyed this audio. The Narrator Bahni Turpin really put the emotion through her reading even when saying the incantations through the story of the magi. There was so much emotion especially around Zelíe and Amari and their hardships and the live they gain throughout the story. All in all I was unable to put it down.

    The ending is gutting.
Adeyemi is a talent, this is for sure. The books are so well written and the story is riveting. I can see the trilogy as a series of films - like a mix of Black Panther and Hunger Games. I’m thrilled to see voices like Adeyemi’s being heard.

Great pace; beautifully read. Virtue and vengeance intertwined. #TheArtOfWar 101. I love the way she's developed the characters even though some of their motivations are not always convincing. Amari especially. But, I love how the author manages to show the complexity of revolutions and how reality crushes ideals and steals dreams. The soap-opera like misunderstandings are also forgivable as the splendor of the magic of Oriisha keeps us spellbound till the end. That ending! Bahni Turpin is a gifted voice artist. I love how she embodies the characters, giving life to their distinct personalities. Awesome work.

I speak Yoruba, the pronunciation of the native words didn’t come off well and it kinda put me off, distracting me from the message of the book. So I switched back to hard copy

This must be the worst African accent interpretation I’ve ever heard and I’m African. Could not go past chapter 1, I guess I’ll give it an A for effort but I had to purchase a physical copy in order to read the book.

This series is such an emotional rollercoaster and it is not disappointing! You fall in love or hate(depending on who it is) with the characters. Tomi keeps it authentic with the unfairness that life can throw at you and it is such an emotional gripping tale. I am once again left enchanted and ready to read the next part of this story. The audiobook is so good and will pull you in. I can't express enough how exciting, action packed, as well as emotionally thrilling this story is. Make sure to read the 1st book so you don't miss out on any part of this great story!

Just like I said with the first part, it is a story that deserves to be read. In this second part, it continues to maintain the very real backdrop behind a fantasy story. Throughout the book, it keeps you engaged with a desire to know how it continues, and with emotions running high. As soon as the third part comes out, I will buy it to find out how this story continues. (Translated from Spanish)

As I understood it, there were only supposed to be two books, but that epilogue can't be the closing of a saga; it leaves a big question unresolved. Although I have an idea of what happens, I'm not sure. It feels like a long journey that just keeps getting longer; it becomes super addictive as it gets closer to the end, but now it just leaves me on edge. I want my happy ending. ? It started off too slow for me, the characters have personality changes compared to the first one that I really don’t like. I understand that they have been through a lot, but I don’t understand why they behave the way they do. There were times I didn’t even remember Tzain; he feels quite irrelevant to me.

Around page 300, it becomes much more interesting and addictive. I feel that if it had been like that from the beginning, I would give it a higher rating. It took me quite a while to get hooked to that point, and I missed the engagement of the first book. Still, I think the author did well to recover the book, and I’m already looking forward to seeing what happens in the third one. (Translated from Spanish)
