    “Samuel Knight’s body was stolen! Impossible!” Jackson replied.

    “Yes. You didn’t hear of it?”

    “Hear of it?” Jackson echoed. “No! I haven’t heard of it whatsoever. I can’t believe it. God, Samuel’s body, was stolen. It sounds impossible to me. Do you have any clue who stole it?”

    “We don’t know. It was lying in state in the living room at the home, awaiting the undertaker to pick it up.”

    “Wasn’t the body watched?”

    “No. Why should it be watched? Who would have supposed for one single minute someone would come and steal the body?”

    “We don’t have any idea. Tim Collins, the undertaker, arrived this morning and found the body gone. One of the windows was open in the room, and Doctor Clair was the only one with a key.”

    “Any theories on who might have done something like that?”

    “The Chief thinks someone hid under the table with a big cloth hanging to the floor draped over it. So, someone hid under the cloth until all was quiet and the door locked and then came out, stole the body, and went out the window.”

    “I’ve never heard of anything like this in all my life,” exclaimed Jackson.

    The big question is, why was Samuel killed, and what happened to the body?

I can’t understand how your father could endure the presence of such a mad killer under the same roof as you. I don’t know how he could even subject you to such danger. No wonder you never smile.” “Oh, you have it wrong. My father believes that though she was convicted of the crime, she was not guilty,” said the young woman in a faint voice. “You say this, Aurora, that your father believes this. From everything I read in the papers, the evidence that proved her guilt was overwhelming. There wasn’t a loophole in the trial whatsoever.” “That’s so true. But you sit there agreeing to have Jack Dannells provide private service for my father and then turn around and find that poor girl who was only fourteen years old guilty of a crime which she could not think up much less plan. We know that Elise Austin is no felon,” said Aurora. “I don’t know, Aurora. You and your father seem to have a boundless charity to the criminals.”

The apparition glided nearer and nearer. The detective could now see clearly that the spirit was carrying in her arms an actual baby child, alive and well, one that was as beautiful as one of the cherubim of heaven with a yellow halo of light encircling its form. It was only the light that illuminated the woman’s form. Gideon remained frozen, not moving a limb of his body. The apparition glided over to the dry well. Then, with her back to Gideon, the baby clasped to her chest, and her head bent over the edge of the well, she looked down into the deep, dark shaft below her. “Oh, my God,” Gideon whispered, “by all that is Holy!” cried the detective. “By the power of the Holy Spirit, be it ghost or flesh and blood, I will not allow her to throw that child into the well!” And with that said, he began running up to the well where the woman or spirit stood, ready to kill another child. Finally, he got there where the radiant form of the woman with the baby in her hands and her eyes fixed on the depths of the well in front of her! Gideon reached her, intending to seize her from behind and whirl her with the child from the brink of the dry well. But ---.”
