Description

TW: homophobia, discrimination, purity culture, religious trauma , depression/mental healthThis week we have my dear friend, Jubilee Ramirez (she/they) (@jubileejaira), on to chat about their experience as a closeted queer person attending a homophobic Christian college. Her experience is definitely unique, but also very relatable to many other individuals in the queer community who have experienced blunt homophobia, shame, and discrimination for simply wanting to be themselves. As much as this episode may only be relatable to a specific group of people, I am hoping that this episode also sheds light on how toxic these universities are and empowers others to hold them accountable. We also speak about a few resources throughout the episode. One being the movie/project, 1946: The Mistranslation That Shifted a Culture, which shares some amazing resources about the fact that the word "homosexual" was never actually in the Bible, and therefore begins to tear down the idea that being queer is a Biblical sin. You can find more info here: https://www.1946themovie.com. The other being an organization called REAP (Religious Exemption Accountability Project) which "empowers queer, trans and non-binary students at more than 200 taxpayer-funded religious schools that actively discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity/expression" & is actively working on a lawsuit to eradicate/amend the policies that allow private religious schools to discriminate in the ways they do. You can donate to them/get involved here: https://www.thereap.org. Lastly, another resource that may be helpful is the Netflix documentary, Pray Away. This documentary focuses on survivors from the conversion therapy movement, and may be very triggering to some queer individuals, so please watch at your own risk.
