    CHAPTER ONE

    Aleena is back in town, my friend Rob told me as we were hanging out at the bar Saturday.

    Aleena, the girl Brent dated in high school? Tony asked.

    That’s the one, Rob said with a nod.

    What happened with you and her? Tony asked.

    I didn’t want to get too much into it. I had lost my virginity to Aleena the summer before she went off to the East Coast for college. I was staying here in town, and we both knew that our senior year romance was not going anywhere beyond that. I didn’t want to say that, because I’d lied to my friends and told them I’d lost my virginity the year before to a girl I’d met on a family trip to Europe. I’d been embarrassed to be my only friend to still be a virgin, or so everybody had said.

    I haven’t seen her since the summer after graduation, I said.

    She still look good? Tony asked, turning to Rob.

    How did you see her? I asked, interrupting.

    She goes to the same gym as me, Rob said. Turning to Tony, She does look good, but I’d say different.

    Better or worse different?

    Okay, I said. Can we not talk about her like that right now?

    You still got a sore spot? Rob asked.

    I just think it’s kind of tacky for you guys to be talking about my ex like that while I’m sitting here.
