About this ebook

It's quite amazing and almost supernatural to think of the powers that a simple mask can bestow upon someone. After all, what is a mask but simply something used to obscure or cover one's face or more recognizable features? At least that is the external and more obvious use of the mask. But its other uses run deeper and can serve a more esoteric function.

Blood Oath - John J. Law

    Chapter One: Under The Mask

It's quite amazing and almost supernatural to think of the powers that a simple mask can bestow upon someone. After all, what is a mask but simply something used to obscure or cover one's face or more recognizable features? At least that is the external and more obvious use of the mask. But its other uses run deeper and can serve a more esoteric function.

In obscuring one's features and concealing the wearer's identity, a mask can serve as another identity altogether. It can serve as a way for the wearer to take on a totally new persona, a persona that allows him more freedom to do things he normally would not. The mask gives the wearer anonymity and power, something his or her conventional identity cannot provide. Joshua Lucas knew this for a fact. Joshua served as a Confederate soldier in the American Civil War and fought valiantly for the losing side.

Joshua did not take the South losing the war very well. He lost all his lands and most of what he had worked for, and his family fell into hard times. This was something Joshua could not accept. One night he decided to do something about this terrible fate that had been bestowed upon him and his family.

It fits. It fits me perfectly.

Joshua placed the gray cloth over his head. It completely covered his face and only had two slits for his eyes. Wearing the cloth over his face, even his voice was muffled, making him sound much more fearsome and ominous than he usually did.

They're going to pay. They're all going to pay and I will make them!

Joshua's words were grim and serious. He had every intention to follow through on them.

Joshua looked through the slits of the gray cloth that covered his face. He could see his reflection in the mirror in front of him. He did cut a very intimidating figure with his Confederate uniform and the cloth covering his face. If he wore only the Confederate uniform, he would look like any other disgruntled soldier of the South. It was the gray cloth that covered his face that made him look almost supernatural. Behind the gray cloth, Lucas smiled. It was amazing what a mask, or in this case a cloth that was used as a mask, could do. He could already imagine the fear and terror that he would sow. He would make them pay for winning the war and he would show them that the South was still very much a force to be reckoned with.

Tonight, the Usurper is born! And I will make them remember that the South is still a force to be reckoned with!

Who are you? What are you doing in here?

Joshua recognized the familiar voice behind him. He turned and saw a little boy shivering with terror at the sight of him. It was his son Roderick who did not even
