About this ebook

He took out a small piece of paper and stared at it. It looked like just any piece of paper, but it was anything but that. This was a very significant document for Deyon. It was the paper that certified him getting his piece of land in Colorado. The piece of paper Deyon had worked long and hard to procure and purchase. He had even served in the Union as a colored soldier in the great war to be able to save up for it. As a former slave, this piece of paper was the most important thing for Deyon.
After being a slave for a good part of most of his life, the paper symbolized the one thing that was so important for Deyon and others like him. Freedom.

The Devil With A Gun - John J. Law

    Chapter One: A New Beginning

Deyon Chambers walked towards the small carriage that was parked at the main road of the small town. It was loading up on the passengers for its trip to Colorado. It was going to be a pretty long trip, but Deyon didn't mind. If it would be a long ride, he would bear with it. If the ride was bumpy or uncomfortable, it wouldn't matter for Deyon. The important thing was for him to get to Colorado and start his new life there.

Freedom.

It was with this thought that Deyon put the paper back in his bag and walked towards the parked carriage. He walked with his head held high and his shoulders raised. He walked with the stride of a free man.

He approached the carriage and the passengers and the carriage driver glared at Deyon. They looked over him from head to toe, and their glares were not the least bit friendly. Even if it had been some years after the Civil war and his freedom had been purchased with blood, this was still a very familiar occurrence. Many people still did not respect Deyon and others like him simply because the color of their skin was a darker shade. Deyon had gotten used to this kind of treatment by now, and he did not react to them.

What do you need? one of the men turned to Deyon and said.

His tone was more dismissive and gruff, than inquiring or receptive.

It was the carriage driver. Milton Earles had been driving the stage coach down these trails for some time now. He was getting older every year, and he had gone through his fair share of hazards with his job. Unfortunately, all that time and experience did not really broaden his mind. Earles was a very petty man whose discrimination for others ran deep.

I'm here to ride the coach. I'm a passenger. Deyon said.

    Got any papers? Earles said.

Deyon handed him his papers. Earles skimmed through them.

    He's good, Milton.

It was Steven Niles the shotgun messenger for the trip. He was not as harsh towards Deyon and was a lot more receptive
