About this ebook

It was a bright and clear morning when Jeff Turner went out hunting. He had settled on a small plot of land along the Guadalupe River in Central Texas with his wife and kids. The homestead was small and simple, and for a time their life seemed idyllic.

He had moved to Central Texas with his family in 1832, hoping for what most homesteaders hoped for. A simple life, where they could settle down and live out their years in peace and quiet. A new life that would hopefully offer a sense of safety and stability for the small family. Unfortunately, they would get not get any of that.

    Prologue: Days Gone By.

    El Paso Texas, December, 1932.

Frank Collinson looked straight ahead. The sun had just set, and evening was just setting into the now bustling city of El Paso in Texas. Frank could hear the rumble of cars all around him. He could smell their exhaust as they trailed off to wherever they were going. People moved about doing their business, and this surprised the old cowboy. Collinson could still remember a time when people were preparing to go to bed at this hour. It seemed this city and its residents didn't sleep.

His view was obstructed by buildings and large structures as far as he could see. The buildings were all lit up by electric lights and signs. They provided a bright contrast to the darkness of the early evening. The horizon was dotted by all these bright structures that were a clear sign of modernity and the progress of this relatively young nation.

Collinson took the entire scene in front of him, and he couldn't help but feel more than a little jarred. His senses seemed to struggle with the reality in front of him, as it constantly dialed back to an earlier, seemingly simpler time.

Collinson was an Englishman by birth, and had come to America in 1872. That was more than 60 years ago, and now it seemed like an eternity ago. Collinson
