CHAPTER ONE
The Bounty Hunter and the Desperadoes
Jeremy paced around the edge of the lake as his brother Todd cast his line. Several minutes had passed, but there was still no bite.
Dang it! We've been standing here for a good hour and there's still no bite!
Jeremy said.
I do believe that an hour is more than a little exaggerated.
Todd said, shaking his head. Upon my estimation, we've only been here for just under thirty minutes.
Jeremy couldn't believe what he was hearing, and began pacing with even more agitation. He resembled a dog chasing its own tail. I just don't know what all the fuss about fishing. If you ask me, it's a silly and boring practice, that's hardly rewarding! We've been standing here at the edge of the lake, like two trees, and nothing's happening!
Todd tried to ignore his brother's rants. They would do no good, nor get the fish to bite any sooner. Perhaps they were even causing more than a little trouble. Stay still, will you? The fish are probably getting spooked out and not biting because of all your ruckus!
So they can see and feel what's going on above the surface now? That's a load of hogwash Todd, and you know it!
I don't know, but I do know that you're not really the main authority on wildlife!
I'll have you know that I plan on becoming a trapper when I grow up! I'll be hunting wild grizzly and trading the furs for a living!
Todd couldn't help himself, and he chuckled. He laughed so hard his fishing line shook. Sometimes, his little brother said the silliest things. You, hunting grizzlies? You couldn't even catch a sleeping turtle!
What are you talking about, big brother?
Come on and get real kid! I can still remember when you shrieked like a lady when we caught a rat scurrying on the floor of our cabin! You shrieked so loud, Pa woke up and had a fit!
Jeremy fumbled for the right words. His big brother never forgot that incident, and always found a way to rub it in, whenever he could. What did you want me to do? It was a big rat!
Jeremy said.
If you're going to be a trapper, you'll be hunting much bigger animals than just that rat!
Todd said.
What's that supposed to mean? I'll let you know, I'll become famous someday!
Famous? So you want to be famous like Wild Bill, Jesse James, or Billy the Kid?
Maybe! If I don't become a trapper, maybe I'll become a famous gunslinger when I grow up!
Todd shook his head, and whistled low. It was hard to ignore his rambunctious little brother. They weren't that far apart in age, but Todd couldn't believe just how pesky Jeremy could be. At twelve, Todd could still remember when he was ten years old, and he knew that he just wasn't that skittish and imaginative. Jeremy was simply so overactive in mind and
