Tim, the toothpaste troll - A L Maher
Imagine, if you will, a world. An infinitesimally small world that can fit on a speck. A speck that is so small it sits on a flower petal. Can you imagine that? Good.
Now forget that because it‘s copyrighted by Dr Suess and imagine this world instead. I know you can because you did a great job on the last one.
This world is pretty small too. It‘s a magical world filled with fairies: Elves, Wizards, Goblins and all the fairyland and storytime creatures.
It also has Trolls.
The main thing about Trolls that most people don‘t know is (and this is a Troll top secret, so don’t tell anyone, okay) that they aren‘t very big. Sure the Trolls of the old days used to be HUGE. But they have all been hunted down, caught by folks carrying pitch forks and killed. Or head-butted by goats and never seen again.
So as a matter of survival, they have evolved to become quite small and unnoticeable. About the same size as your average fairy. They have also started trading with other magical creatures for things like fairy dust and other magical bits and pieces.
Chapter 1
Meet Tim. Tim is a Troll.
He also isn’t very happy. You would have thought that being a Troll, being unhappy should have been great. Trolls aren’t exactly known for being the light-hearted, happy-go-lucky sort. But Tim didn’t like being miserable. Being miserable made him...miserable.
He was not happy for many reasons. The first was because he was called Tim. I mean, it’s not a very Trollish name, is it? All his friends have cool Troll names like Gronk or Thrug. But he was just Tim.
He also didn‘t have a job at the moment.
Due to the hard economic times,
he was told. There is a lot of unemployment among magical creatures. Thousands of fairy folk of all kinds were being laid off due to budgetary constraints.
Tim used to work in the Colds and Flu factory, generating sneezes in the Crusty Nose department. But they had to let him go
– something to do with antibiotics getting so much better these days in the human world. He didn’t really understand it, but that’s what they told him.
The only magical creatures that had managed to keep their jobs and prosper in these uncertain economic times were the ones doing classic fairy jobs. The Tooth Fairy industry was booming. But there was no way he would ever qualify for one of these roles.
What could he do to shake off the doldrums he was in? Tim remembered being happy once. It was a summer afternoon a few years back. He had picked his nose and got a really good bogey that had stretched on for ages. That had made him feel all funny inside. It made his mouth go a funny shape, all curled up at each side and it made him.
He decided that the only thing he could do to shake these duldrums was go to the pub. Not very productive, I know, but that’s what he decided to do. He picked himself up out of the chair and walked out the door.
It was a bright, sunny day. The birds were singing and the sky was a lovely blue colour. Pixies played and frolicked as he walked past. Then they noticed him and
