The Final Days of the Last Gunslinger - John J. Law

    Chapter One: Brian John

Brian John had drunk a lot more than he wanted to that night. He had always been a man with some kind of chip on his shoulder. Emotional distress was his constant companion, wherever he went. Tonight however, was different from other nights. A lot different.

At first glance, it did not seem like any other night for an outlaw like Brian John. He was still hanging around some dingy saloon in some remote town that wasn't on most maps. He was still wandering aimlessly looking for trouble. But this time, he was looking for trouble for a good reason. Or at least a good reason in Brian John's crazed mind.

    Albert Benjamin! Damn you!"

One of the other patrons of the saloon approached Brian John. Mister, I've lost count of all the times you called out to Albert the Bruce tonight! At first, I was gonna let it all slide on account a' you bein' drunk as a pig an' all. But it's starting to grate on my nerves an' on everyone else's here in this fine establishment! So now I'm askin' ya to please shut yer trap already!

Brian John stared at the man and smiled. He was not intimidated in the least bit by his words.

Heh. Yer askin' me to shut up? Well, I bought this bottle of whiskey here, an' I'll say what I damn well want to while I'm drinkin' it!

The man glared at Brian John. You think you can just cause a public disturbance and rant all night? Who the hell do you think you are?

Brian John laughed and shook his head. You don't know who I am? I'm Brian John, the orneriest outlaw in this or any territory!

The man looked at Brian John then at his other companions who sat a few tables away. He laughed loud and hard. His companions also laughed along with him, which infuriated Brian John. His smile quickly turned into a snarl. What the hell is so damn funny?

What's so funny? You are! You think you're somebody. You think you're famous? You're nothing! The old days of gunslingers are long dead and gone. The Indians have been beaten back to small, cramped reservations, an' the whole country's been mapped out. Law and order is the rule now, not the exception. And the worst part? That time came an' went, but nobody here recognizes you! Who the hell are you anyway? We don't know no Brian John!

You don't know me? You don't know me?

The man couldn't stop laughing even as Brian John's anger and rage increased.

Don't know you from Adam, mister! But Albert the Bruce. everybody knows who he is! Orneriest son of a...

    Don't mention his name!

Brian John could not endure the man's taunts any longer. Before the man could do anything, Brian John drew a pair of six-shooters from his person. He was still sitting down when he pulled them
