    Reverend Jed led the way along the crumbling tarmac, his Bible tight against his chest, the Book of the Damned trembling like a caged animal in the worn pouch at his waist. Ruth staggered along behind him, her dress in tatters, tears and mucus streaking the layer of dirt covering her face.

    A light rain fell on the road. Jed opened his mouth to the sky and allowed it to moisten his lips and tongue. Ruth cupped her hands to collect it.

    Lifeless trees dotted the landscape, bent nearly to the breaking point. They were barely visible through the turbid maelstrom that raged beyond the confines of the road. Structures that once gave shelter lay all around them in ruin, blasted by the sand and debris roaring toward the ravenous thing that waited at the road's terminus.

    The wall of wind approached
