The Power Of Habit - Transforming Your Life One Step At A Time - Odessa Matteson

    CHAPTER ONE

    THE SCIENCE OF HABIT FORMATION

Habits, those repeated behaviours we do almost without thinking, are compelling and form a significant part of our daily lives. They can include basic tasks like brushing our teeth every morning to more complex routines such as the way we prepare for a big presentation at work. But what exactly makes something a habit, and how do these habits embed deeply into our routines?

Every habit is rooted in a primary yet fascinating neurological loop consisting of three key elements: a cue, a routine, and a reward. This loop is an integral part of understanding how habits form and function. The A cue is an event that sets your brain on autopilot and signals the behaviour. It could be anything from a time of day, a feeling, a location, or even the presence of certain people. For instance, feeling stressed (cue) might lead you to bite your nails (routine) to seek some relief or distraction (reward).

The routine is the behaviour, the action you take whenever you're exposed to the cue. It's what we typically think of as a habit. This could be physical, mental, or emotional. Routines can be beneficial, like running when you're anxious, or harmful, like smoking when stressed.

The reward is crucial in establishing and reinforcing habits. It's why you're drawn to do the same thing repeatedly. Rewards can be diverse and sometimes take time to immediately apparent. They can be physical, such as the rush of endorphins after a workout, or psychological, like the sense of relief when you give in to a craving. The reward creates a sense of satisfaction and pleasure, which your brain remembers the next time the cue appears.

Understanding this loop is essential because it underpins every habit. If you ever want to change a habit, it's necessary to disconnect this loop and understand each component. Recognizing the signal and the benefit connected to a routine can be enlightening and is the first step towards effective change. Sometimes, the reward might differ from what we initially think. For example, if you're eating cookies every afternoon, the reward might not be the sweet taste of the cookie itself but rather the break it signifies from work or the momentary escape from stress.

Over time, as this loop – cue, routine, reward – gets repeated, habits become more and more automatic. This process is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it's great for efficiency; you don't have to think about brushing your teeth every morning; you do it. On the other hand, this can make harmful habits especially hard to break, as they become deeply ingrained in our daily routine, often without us even realizing it.

Understanding the habit loop gives us a powerful insight into how our behaviours are shaped and how we can alter them. By observing and dissecting this process, we arm ourselves with the tools necessary to make meaningful changes to our habits, thereby paving the way for positive transformations in our lives. This knowledge is not just academic; it's practical and life-changing. It tells us that by tweaking the elements of the habit loop, we can break free from negative patterns and establish new, healthier routines that support our overall well-being and life goals.
