Chapter 1: How Habits Become Habits
The kind of life we lead today is essentially the product of our habits – our daily routines, our daily processes. And no one has ever described this natural phenomenon more accurately than the great Greek philosopher Aristotle who said, "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act but a habit."
What we repeatedly do, the things we read and think about, and the routine tasks we perform every single day is what shaped our beliefs and transformed us into the kind of person we are today. It is what molded the type of personality we portray. In other words, our whole life is nothing more than the sum of our habits. How successful or unsuccessful we are is the result of our habits.
Almost everyone wants to make changes in their lives. They want to be become a better person for themselves and for others. They are appalled by the overnight success of America’s youngest billionaires such as Evan Spiegel, Dustin Moskovitz, and Mark Zuckerberg. They idolize the likes of Bill Gates and Carlos Slim Helu and want to emulate them.
They would like to attain the level of success these people have achieved. The only problem is they focus too much on the stories and how these people raked in their fortunes and not on their habits and routines which really made them the icons of success they are today.
