    Acknowledgement

Writing this book has been a labor and a journey that I couldn’t have undertaken without the incredible support and encouragement of many individuals. I am profoundly grateful to all those who have played a part in bringing this project to fruition.

I would like to thank each person who was instrumental in shaping my path to writing this manuscript. My sincerest appreciation goes to the countless friends and family who graciously gave me space and time to make this book become a reality.

First and foremost, I want to express my deepest gratitude to my family whose unwavering belief in me and constant encouragement have been my driving force. Your love and support have sustained me through the challenges of this creative process. I give honor to my late parents, whose unwavering belief has been the catalyst to propel me in this journey. Their constant encouragement and unconditional love have been my strength to pursue this endeavor. I say thank you to my siblings Michael, Anthony, Pauline and Sharon who have now passed on but are the silent voices that ignited me to write this book. Through their life, in their own small contributing way, I have come to realize that this journey we call life is valuable and how we start the journey does not dictate how we finish it.

I would like to thank all of my mentors and teachers who helped me by sharing their invaluable knowledge base with me, as they guided me from a place of knowing in shaping my ideas and refining my writing. I cherish your warm guidance, encouragement, and belief in me, and my potential and I can attest to the fact that it has been transformative. I am sincerely hoping that this book will serve as a helpful resource and companion guide on my readers’ journey toward self-improvement, empowerment, and fulfillment.

I’d also like to thank the team at AIA and Publishing Services for their dedication and hard work in bringing this book to life. Your expertise coaching and guidance in outlining, design, formatting, and marketing have been pivotal in turning my manuscript into a polished publication.

Additionally, I am grateful to my dear friends, who provided much-needed moral support and encouragement during the writing process. I am forever grateful for your influence and for your push to encourage me into what you believe I could be. Thank you all for the guidance and the wisdom you shared with me as I stumbled along my sometimes-rocky road of personal growth and self-discovery. I extend my heartfelt appreciation to my friends and colleagues who provided valuable feedback, engaged in insightful discussions, and cheered me on during moments of doubt. Your enthusiasm has been contagious and uplifting.

Finally, I want to acknowledge my readers—those who will engage with this book. Your curiosity and interest in my ideas fuel my passion for writing, and I hope this book resonates with you in meaningful ways. In writing this book, I’ve come to realize that the journey is made sweeter by the presence of supportive souls. To all those I’ve mentioned and to anyone whose name might have been inadvertently omitted, please know that your impact has been immeasurable.

To all of you, your enthusiasm, engagement, and support to me have been more than appreciated. Let me end by saying once again to my readers that I applaud you for buying this book to enhance and empower your personal development. I trust that this book will meet your desire.

    With heartfelt thanks,

    Introduction

A large number of elderly individuals worldwide reside in a communal household with their extended relatives. They often opt for this as their primary living arrangement. On the other hand, the living arrangements of older individuals in the United States differ significantly, often involving solitary living or cohabitation with their spouse or partner.

In the United States, about 27% of people who are 60 years of age or older live by themselves. This is higher compared to 16% in the 130 countries and areas that were studied. Less than 5% of elderly individuals in countries within the Asia-Pacific, sub-Saharan Africa, and Middle East-North Africa regions, such as Afghanistan, Mali, and Algeria, choose to reside alone. In the United States, people who are 60 and older are more likely than people in other countries to live with a partner without having young children at home. Nearly half of Americans in this particular age range (46%) live in a household with only one spouse or partner. This is higher than the global average of three in ten people (31%). Very few older adults in sub-Saharan Africa (9%) live in this arrangement. Around the world, it is most common for people who are 60 years of age and older to live with their extended family. This means they live with relatives like grandchildren, nephews, and their adult children’s spouses. Almost four out of ten elderly people (38%) live in this kind of living situation, with two-thirds or more in Iraq, Namibia, and India. This is much higher than the 6% of people who are 60 years old or older in the United States (Ausubel, 2020).

While elderly people’s living arrangements in the United States are significantly different from those in many other countries, they are comparable to those in other wealthy countries. In general, households are smaller in more successful nations, as indicated by a number of indicators such as education, lifespan, and economic production. People tend to have fewer children and may have them later in life in nations with more developed economies. They are also more likely to survive well past the age at which they are capable of bearing children. For older individuals to afford to stay in their own homes, governments in wealthy nations may also provide financial help or health care benefits. In many European countries, for example, rates of living alone for older people are even higher than they are in the United States. Extended families are more prevalent in developing countries because they make better use of
