About this ebook
My purpose is to encourage and help anyone who feels stuck, who is not sure where they’re going on this journey called life.
For most of my 75 years, like so many of us, I have had self-doubts and fear of failure, and put myself in so many categories like ‘I’m not very clever’, ‘I’m not good at many things’ or ‘Other people are smarter, born gifted at music, technology, public speaking and life in general’.
A year ago, I published my first book – The Boxer: My Journey to Lifelong Health & Fitness – which unravelled my personal life story. This was after years of procrastination, thinking that I could never do it ... thinking to myself, ‘Who would be interested anyway?’
I finally did it and have been humbled by the fantastic response.
Because of the terrific feedback, I’ve found the confidence to express my thoughts, passion and overwhelming belief that we all have the power and ability to control our destiny.
So this book, about living your best life, is also my personal reflection on turning 75.
To reach 75 years of age, fit, healthy and happy is not a rite of passage or taken lightly, but a privilege shared by few.
It sees me appreciating every new moment of this amazing journey we call life.
What a ride!

Reflection
In June 2019, I turned 75 years of age. The morning of my birthday, waking in the early hours as is my norm, I was deep in thought and had an amazing feeling of gratitude, which hung over me as though I was floating in a cloud of peace, contentment and inner joy. I felt that I had to share this moment and perhaps inspire even one person looking for solace and contentment.
So this book, about living your best life, is also my personal reflection on turning 75. To reach 75 years of age, fit, healthy and happy is not a rite of passage or taken lightly, but a privilege shared by few. It sees me appreciating every moment of this amazing journey we call life.
What a ride! I’ve been so fortunate, and at times incredibly lucky, looking back and reflecting on being a young boy born in 1944 during the Second World War and starting life growing up in the inner suburbs of Melbourne.
Life and the world that we share today is vastly different from the one that I feel so blessed to have grown up in. Living through good and not so good times, it has taken this journey for me to realise that not wasting a minute and enjoying every day with purpose and passion, spending my time with quality people who bring out the best in me in this forever changing world, is the catalyst for me to be the best version of myself.
These thoughts and feelings were the prelude for me to share my ideas and passion to write this, my second book.
I hope you enjoy it.
Dedication
This book is dedicated to the thousands of clients that I’ve been privileged to work with over the last 20 years. Many have continued to grab life by the scruff of the neck, with excellent lifestyle choices, becoming healthy, happy and successful in life regardless of genetics, past lifestyle and environment.
However, it’s also true that many have found their current lifestyle, poor choices and environmental circumstances too difficult to change in the long-term.
I am forever amazed by the human race. I’ve built relationships with people who, to an outsider, have been very successful in acquiring a vast amount of material wealth (stuff) only to find that during the ageing process – with poor health, limited mobility, and lack of vitality and energy – they have come to realise that without good health they have nothing.
I have been taught by all of you and for that I’m forever grateful.
Acknowledgements
Thanks to the special people in my life for your support and encouragement. Without you and many others I would never have had the confidence and courage to share my thoughts, passion, plans and ideas in my constant quest to encourage people from all walks of life to be the best version of themselves.
Sharyn Smith – my wife, business partner, best friend and harshest critic, thank you for giving me free rein to follow my dreams. At the same time, your total honesty, common sense and intelligence make our wonderful life a reality. Sharyn also kindly provided input, advice and content for the nutrition section in Part 7 of Chapter 12.
Tony Coppock – my mate, thank you for your support, energy and enthusiasm over many years helping Sharyn and I build a culture into our boxing centre that we are both immensely proud of.
Dr Jack Knobel – a special client and friend for many years, your weekly sessions are not only fun and hard work, but sharing our sometimes silly banter, thoughts and ideas for this book, and life in general, is priceless.
Dr Joshua Honig – my GP and dear friend of many years, I value our relationship more than you could ever know. Health really is the greatest wealth!
Martyn Ashton – a special friend, I value our relationship and honest discussions that cover all aspects of our lives. Your energy and vitality help make our special boxing troupe the wonderful part of my life that it is.
Tim Hall (The Wizard) – our paths crossed and planets aligned not so very long ago and I feel so proud and fortunate to have you in my corner. You have become a trusted friend and make our little troupe that much brighter.
Adam Finlay at Writefish (editor extraordinaire) – we were fortunate to cross paths through a very special lady. You made my first book come alive and I’m forever grateful to you for helping me tell my story. This book was very different and you set me challenges that I wasn’t sure I could come through on, but with your understanding, guidance and support, I think we got there. You’ve been incredibly supportive to me and Sharyn and nothing we put to you is too much trouble. You have a way of turning my jumbled thoughts into a story … words are inadequate to thank you for this. You have an exceptional understanding of what I’m trying to convey and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Jennifer Mosher at IndieMosh (publisher extraordinaire) – after the wonderful job you and your team did with my first book, The Boxer: My Journey to Lifelong Health & Fitness, we had no hesitation in returning to your capable hands. We are so grateful that Adam introduced us to you. You show enormous professionalism, empathy and understanding for the publishing process (a world that is very new to
