    PREFACE

On a cold, sunny December day in 1986, I was honored to be graduating from New York Chiropractic College with my doctorate. The keynote speaker, Dr. Louis Sportelli, succeeded in filling my heart with a sense of pride and purpose. In his presentation, he first held above his head a Life magazine to define the quality of society in the 1960s, people that had a broad sense of community and caring for the world. He next held up a People magazine to illustrate society in the 1970s, which was also community minded and caring of one another. Lastly he held up a Self magazine to illustrate our society as it was in the 1980s and how we had become much more interested in just ourselves. At the time, my interpretation of this metaphor was that to be a good doctor one must be completely selfless in caring for others. All others. A big mistake was that I did not fit caring for myself into the process at all.

I became the dedicated doctor and businesswoman by day, usually seven days, and was quickly rewarded for my efforts with a successful and inspiring practice of which I was very proud. By night and weekend, I was the dedicated wife, managing everything that went into running a household. At the time, I loved it all and was pretty good at it.

After years of living this way, it caught up with me. I was in constant overdrive, never pausing long enough to put myself on my to-do or to-be or to-have list.

By my fifth year of practice, I looked into the beautiful face of my firstborn, fell totally in love, and became forever changed. My practice went part-time, and I developed a natural serenity to slow down and to truly enjoy my child. Soon, I was blessed again with a delightful second angel, and I was going to enjoy every single moment as these precious years were numbered. My daughters opened a whole new rapturous world of discovery, and there was complete joy and fulfillment that was just indescribable. Somehow though, there—just below my consciousness, was a subtle torment between the professional me and the mom me that I should be better, do more, and be more successful. I was struggling to learn to be able to just be—and not constantly do.

This torment prompted me to confide in my best friend. I remember telling Kathy that I felt like my life was running like plates on sticks. The lady sets them up one at a time, spinning the plate on the stick, and runs frantically between them to jiggle the stick to keep the plates spinning. Kathy listened compassionately but replied candidly, I’ve got some good news and some bad news; the bad news is it’s only gonna get worse. The good news is you’re gonna get better at it!

I did just that—get better at it. I began to just be and in those be moments, my head became very clear; and like a veil had lifted, I realized that my marriage had turned into a relationship of his must-haves and my must-dos and responsibilities. The joy and respect for each other that is essential for a healthy relationship was gone; and with that, the arrival of a point of no return. I filed for divorce. My children were two and eight months old.

Several months later, I can still remember him bringing the girls home after a visit. He had my older daughter, Kimberly, by the hand and placed Nicole, who was in her car seat, gently on the floor. He said, The sad thing about this is that your life has gotten so much easier. I couldn’t have agreed more—or have been smiling any bigger!

With that divorce came the revelation and the freedom to choose to nourish my own soul. Rather than just accept and deal with whatever situation came at me, I intentionally began to choose to create situations that brought me happiness, peace, and health—mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual. Life was now about me. I mattered, I had a voice, and I was not about to compromise my spirit any longer.

Financially, it was a different picture. It ended up that I had to start almost all over again. I am proud and thankful that I had the intestinal fortitude, or guts, to clear away the source of negativity in my life. I was making a fresh start and financially going into the future would be on my terms. Gradually, a sense of uncertainty led to a sense of elation and positive expectancy. You will see, as I envisioned, that this attitude has brought many, many rewards!

The beginning of my good fortune was when a friend suggested that I read The Game of Life and How to Play It by Florence Scovel Shinn. I praise her teachings for handing me the key and showing me the way to unlock, grasp the handles, and open the double doors to allow in a beautiful breeze of more than enough love, money, peace, ease, and happiness.

Mrs. Shinn taught that life is not supposed to be a battle, but a game. Games are supposed to be fun! She taught that we create the experience that we call life with the creative power of our very own thoughts and words and that we can recreate our reality this way in an instant. She also taught me to ask for help, that we are not meant to do it all alone, and that this assistance is at our beck and call.

I began to apply her principles, that I like to refer to as charms, which enabled me to tap into my own inner power; because like a magic charm, I began to attract all the good that I would accept. I say accept because, very often, I stood in the way of my own good. I was so used to believing that I had to give something first or that I needed to work very hard for something that I sincerely did not know how to receive a gift. God would be so generous with material things, friends, a helping hand, or just a boost—and so quickly, that it startled me and, at times, caused me to recoil. I did not know how to respond to something easily received and often halted my own good.

The more I put the charms into action, they naturally began to sink into my consciousness and became a part of me. Life began to flow much like a gentle stream. My days became so much more pleasant. I began to easily and, at times, effortlessly attract more of what I wanted and less of what I didn’t want. I was able to sense a guiding force that had been there all along but had been too distracted to pay attention. There became a calm certainty that all would be well. I was finally learning how to let go of struggle.

Fast-forward ten years, and today is July 19, my birthday. My boyfriend, John, and I are relaxing in a magnificent hotel after last night’s concert and dinner, all gifts from an appreciative patient. I pause to reflect and give thanks that all of my dreams have come true. My life is filled with so much love, excellent health, great friends, a successful practice, an occupation that I love, a home that I built in my chosen town, travel, continuous educational pursuits and financial comfort. I tell you this to let you know that all that I have, all that I am, and all that I do began with applying these charms.

An even greater charm is that what you want wants you too! The Chinese actually call this the law of reciprocity: that whatever we seek in the universe seeks us. Whatever we send out—negative or positive—by way of our attitude, feelings, thoughts, words, desires, and actions will return to us as surely as an echo. At times the Universe can return to us something that is even better than what we can imagine, which the Chinese call the law of substitution.

This book is my newest dream to come true and has been written for three reasons: one, because I’m compelled and excited to share with you all that I learned, experienced, and created during the past ten years; two, because it makes my day to hear the amazing results of my students when they awaken to their own magic; and three because talking so much about all this with patients gets me in trouble for running late! I just know that with the application of these charms, you too will awaken to the power you possess, and rather than be frightened by it, to really enjoy what this knowledge brings you! Your life will be enriched in countless ways with better health, wealth, love, and happiness and through experiences that will both surprise you and delight you. I would love to hear from you so be sure to write me at www.awakenyourmagic.com with your own magical stories of success!

Sonia Choquette, a gifted metaphysician, teacher and world-renowned author of numerous books such as Creating Your Heart’s Desire and Ask Your Guides teaches that we are not here to be in reform school, that we are actually in art school and we are here to create. Consequently, I continue to learn, experience and grow as a lifetime student and artist. It has worked very well for me so far!

If you have chosen to read this book, you are meant to be here with me and that you dare to dream and become, and I am so honored to be with you! You are ready to receive the miracles you are seeking for now and for the rest of your life. So pull up your favorite comfortable chair and a tasty, soul-nourishing beverage, and let’s get started. I wish for you to receive all that you dream.

With much gratitude and abundant blessings,

    Dr. Cathy

The best way to make your dreams come true is to wake up.

    —Paul Valery

    INTRODUCTION

Life is just a fantasy. Can you live this fantasy life?

    —Aldo Nova

THE GREATEST SECRET OF THE AGES

Imagination is more important than knowledge.

    —Albert Einstein

The best and safest thing is to keep a balance in your life, acknowledge the great powers around us and in us. If you can do that, and live that way, you are really a wise man.

    Euripides, Athenian Playwright and Poet

Without your knowing, you may be asleep to your own sense of power, energy, wisdom, and healing. There is an infinite, magnificent, and loving intelligence that is within every cell of you and in all that surrounds you. It has been there all along, all you need do is awaken to it.

The universe, and all living organisms are composed purely of matter, or substance, and intelligence. This Universal Intelligence is the magical power that serves to act on and organize all matter around you. When the matter is a living organism like you, this same intelligence is within and is called Innate Intelligence. Innate serves as your magical power with the ability to organize and heal you.

Know this intelligence, this power, as your birthright; a gift to you to assist you and guide you throughout your life. This gift is meant to attract to you, as surely as a magnet attracts metal, all that you dream—and often far more and far better than you dream—if you are awake and trust that inner knowing to allow it to guide you. Your dreams are there for a reason, nudging you to fulfill your destiny. Said a different way, when He gives you the vision, He supplies the provision; and if He brings you to it, He brings you through it.

Throughout this text there will be discussion of numerous laws and principles, and the terms seem a little stiff to me, so I have occasionally referred to them as charms. Webster’s Dictionary defines charms in part as anything supposed to possess magic power; to attract irresistibly; to be fascinating, which is the magic that you will awaken to.

Begin your awakening by first opening your eyes. Look at you. Look all around you. All that you are, have, and do has been created by you, whether you meant to or not. Because up until now, your feelings, which usually generate your thoughts, words and actions created what surrounds you. For example, if you had feelings, thoughts and words of anger or anxiety, you are probably experiencing days filled with angry or stressful circumstances. To the contrary, if you had feelings, thoughts and words of thankfulness and joy, you are more than likely attracting days filled with gifts and happy experiences.

You also created an invisible container that you carry in your heart that allows you to gratefully accept or limit or reject the good things that the Universe offers you. Think for a moment. What is the container you are holding in your heart? How big is it? What is it made of? Is it a tiny locket? Is it an old cracked and chipped coffee mug? An unsturdy cardboard box? Imagine with me your container being a shiny, finely polished solid-steel freight train that has the size and strength and speed to hold and quickly transport all of your dreams and wishes into your life.

What is your dream? Can you imagine

    1. vibrant good health and the energy to fully enjoy your day?

    2. living joyfully in the home of your dreams?

    3. matching up with a magical partner?

    4. enjoying fulfilling relationships with your children? Your family? Your friends and coworkers?

    5. traveling to your lifelong dream destinations?

    6. adorning your beautiful self with amazing jewelry and clothing?

    7. pinching yourself as you excel in your perfect livelihood?

    8. the great idea that makes you an avalanche of money?

    9. waking up every day, grateful and genuinely happy to be alive?

The charms are clearly explained using a unique blend of science and storytelling that is meant to guide you through a playful and natural awakening.

I will be referring to God, the Universe, and Universal Intelligence as one and the same. Choose to go along with whichever is comfortable for you. The purpose of this book is not at all about semantics. The purpose is to acquaint you with the all-knowing, all-powerful, generous, benevolent, and creative life force that magnificently exists all around us and through us. That you can tap into this Universal Intelligence to naturally create your best life at any given moment.

To experience your best magic, believe that there is a world beyond your five senses. You will be pleasantly surprised to learn that you already use this magic every day often without even thinking about it; and that science has proven this world exists!

As you know, radio waves cannot be perceived with any of your five senses. Yet you just know that with the click to power on and a simple turn of a radio dial, you can tune into a specific frequency and hear your favorite tunes or talk-radio broadcast.

Similarly, and still without your five senses, just believe that this most generous and magnificent force exists. Turn the power on with your open mind and use the charms as your radio dial to tune your life into your favorite frequency. Enjoy the music!

    THE MAIN RULE

Blessed is the man who can laugh at himself, for he will never cease to be amused.

    —proverb found in many cultures

There is just one rule that I insist upon, and that is to have fun! Take the time to enjoy your path to success. Have a blast focusing on what you would like to see happen in your life. Let the Universe take care of the how. When you enjoy yourself as is the case with just about anything, your awakening and dream arrival will be natural, easy, and energized; and you will be wherever there is for you as quickly as you are willing to use your imagination to feel, think, and speak it to life.

Vividly imagining what you would like to see happen in your life is absolutely necessary for your dream to come true. You will learn how to use all of your senses to align and strengthen your creative thoughts and words.

Tell me and I’ll forget. Show me, and I may not remember. Involve me, and I’ll understand.

    —Native American proverb

Let’s get started. Treat yourself to a beautifully decorated journal, hand-made or store-bought, and find an equally special pen to be used only for the purpose of playing the games recommended in this book.

The first objective here is to help you to vividly imagine living your dream with the creative power of your thoughts and words.

The easiest and most enjoyable way to access your creative imagination is for you to determine which type of learner you are. There are generally three types, and although we can be all three, one type can be more dominant. So choose which one you are and be sure to follow these instructions when asked to play the games.

    • Most people learn and understand by seeing and are called the visual type of learner. So when you are asked to play a game, be sure to have on hand and use colored pens and pencils, paint, colored paper, magazine photos, or even your own photos to add color and life to your dreams.

    • If you are one who learns and understands better by hearing, you are an auditory type of learner. Listen to or better yet, record your own songs or write poetry that can shape your dreams. This will add an auditory sense of flair to what you would like to create.

    • If you are more of a kinesthetic or mover type of learner, who learns by physically doing something, then move your dreams from the invisible to the visible with dance, tennis, volleyball, golf, or even hopscotch!

Feel free to use your favorite combination of any of the three or all of them together. Just like making soup, the more ingredients you put in, the more soup you will get out. The more creativity you use with joy, the more creative power you will have.

Turn your face to the sun, and the shadows fall behind you.

    —Maori proverb

Along the way, be sure to record all of your successes! They will be a reminder to you that you are making progress with your games along your path, as well as your validation that your wishes are on their way.
