FOREWORD

This first edition of Unlocking Your Credit Potential: A Reentry Guide to Building Financial Stability is born out of a need that is very critical and important, but rarely discussed or documented. The contents of this document apply to both citizens who are currently incarcerated and their families/support system(s). Focusing on the end goal: one’s release, starts on day one of incarceration and the other is the Financial Literacy and Credit Education parts of one’s goals. Every individual’s financial success (incarcerated or free), or lack, thereof, is attributable to mastering these two giants in the financial industry. Notice, I intentionally did not use the term knowing. There is a substantial difference in knowing something and mastering it. The mastering part is well laid out in this document. This document should be read by every individual who is incarcerated, as well as family member(s) or support individual(s) as a resource and guide to an increased chance of success once released. It incorporates mindset and skillset very accurately and effectively.

This document examines issues affecting many incarcerated individuals and provides solutions to those issues. I am uniquely qualified to address issues affecting both incarceration and family/support.

First, I have been in the Financial Literacy and Credit Education areas for over 13 years. I have coached and educated individuals who started with no credit scores, sub-par credit scores and just good enough scores. My goal and plan are to get them excellent credit. Whether release from incarceration or being financially literate and obtaining excellent credit, the S.M.A.R.T system is a must for setting goals.

How we see and utilize money is a difference-maker for many of us. What do I mean? Money is an incredible servant as we can use it (legally) to improve the quality of our lives and others. Conversely, money makes a horrible master, as it can, and will motivate us to do anything to obtain it, leading to very negative consequences. We must control it and not let it control us.
