This statement could guide all our actions, but is particularly true where recovery from illness or injury is concerned. When injury occurs, or illness strikes, most of us rely totally upon our doctor and fail to realize that the cure comes from within ourselves. We fail to realize that nature has provided us with a wondrous inner healing force and that we influence it's effectiveness by what we think, by what we feel, by what we eat, by what we do or don't do, and by how we deal with life.
Dr. O. Carl Simonton, in Getting Well Again, says that Everyone participates in his or her health or illness at all times.
The more we learn about how we participate in our health or illness, the better prepared we will be to take an active role in our own recovery. New knowledge about health and the effects of life style bring about changes in the body, brain, and mind that result in harmony and accelerated recovery.
Research has shown that our fast paced modern lifestyle creates great danger to good health, and it creates an even greater danger to many patients recovering from injury or illness. The dangers include high stress levels, a lack of physical exercise, fast foods, negative emotions, unrealistic expectations, alcohol abuse, and drug dependency.
This book is the result of hundreds of classroom hours teaching industrially injured or ill workers how to overcome disability. It was developed over thirteen years of research, study, and practical application. It is intended as a guide to anyone anywhere who is slow to recover and don't know why. A study of the concepts and techniques in this book will teach you how to overcome disability and improve the quality of your life.
You play an important role in your recovery process. You should ask questions of your doctors and therapists to learn about your condition. You should feel free to get second and even third opinions if you wish. But you should not attempt to manage your pain or otherwise treat yourself without first obtaining professional counseling. It’s only wise to make use of the best resources available to you.

This book was designed to meet the differing needs of individuals and to help each person create his own recovery program.

The Disability Trap
A trap is defined as any uncomfortable situation that restricts freedom, causes suffering or discomfort, and/or causes one to forego more desirable alternatives. A trap can be a self-image, a reputation, other people's expectations, chronic pain, or a belief of some nature.
Traps may be a vague, or not so vague, feeling that a situation must be accepted as it is and there is no way out. Or, one might assume that the cost to get out of a trap is too high. If one assumes the cost is too high, they forget there is a price to be paid for all things...a price for staying in the trap and a price for getting out of the trap!
This leads to, as they say, a Good News/Bad News story. The bad news is that it's easy to slip into a trap and it's easy to stay there. The good news is you have the assets necessary to free yourself from the trap. One can get out of any trap if you know what steps to take and are willing to take them.
Three specific assets, inherent in every individual, are of great importance in obtaining freedom from a disability trap.
1. SELF-RELIANCE - Reliance upon your own capabilities and resources. No one can dictate what is right for you because you alone know what you want.
2. VIGILANCE - Watchfulness. Be alert, be ready, and always be prepared to modify that which is not working. Maintain a healthy distance between your witness and your actions. Give yourself an opportunity to evaluate the appropriateness of your performance/behaviors and choose to change when your outcomes are contrary to your desire.
3. HONESTY - Having or manifesting integrity and truth, .not characterized by deception or fraud, genuine Being honest particularly with yourself, is extremely important. You can't change what isn't acknowledged as a part of the problem. Be accepting of your mistakes. Correct them, pay for them, or learn from them, but don't get stuck because of them! See that they don't interfere with your security. See that you don't remain vulnerable to your mistakes and be doomed to repeat them.
Basic steps that will get out of a trap.
First, acknowledge that you're in a trap.
Recognize there is a price for staying in the trap and there is a price for getting out of the trap.
Recognize there is a way out and work to discover the way.
Be willing to pay the price to get out of the trap!
Specific steps to free you from the Disability Trap
1. Realize you are unique. Your are a unique individual, different from all other human beings. No one else has the exact same nature that you have. No one reacts to things in exactly the same way you do. No one sees the world exactly as you do. No one can dictate what id right for your because you alone are best qualified to discover exactly what is.
2. Do things for your own reasons. Human beings do things for their own reasons and their actions arise from their own desires and their own level of understanding. Each individual's actions stem from his own knowledge base and he acts in ways he believes will bring personal satisfaction. A person acts to produce the outcomes that he thinks will make him feel better. If you're not getting the outcomes you want, check your reasons for why you're doing things. If your reasons are valid, then change what you're doing!
3. You must deal with what's real to get what you want. Human beings must deal with reality. You must deal with the real world, In order to get what you want, you need to treat things and people the way that they are, not the way that you wished they were.
4. Become aware that you view the world subjectively. Each person has a window of perception through which all incoming information is filtered. Your world is colored by your own experience...your limited perceptions and interpretations of those experiences. The way you perceive the world and your circumstances has a tremendous influence on how you feel. Expand your awareness, look for new ways to interpret your perceptions and past experience.
5. Check your outcomes. Is life giving you what you want? Your don't have to know the final truth about everything, but the more of the truth you can face, the more effective your recovery will be. All you really have to know is, is your life working the way you want? Are you getting the results you want? If not, do something different! Search for and discover effective strategies to enable necessary changes.
6. Recognize your emotional nature and realize you can control how you feel. the first rule of effective therapy is to understand that you come to feel as you behave and that you behave as you think. In recognizing your emotional nature, acknowledge and respect your emotions but realize that rational thinking, followed by reasonable action is the key to success. Learn to create and carry out plans by which to satisfy your emotions, always allowing for changes in yourself, as well as the world.
7. Become aware you are in a trap and realize there are ways to get out. Learn that changes are possible. Search out new ways to cope with the changes that have come into your life and act upon your findings.
8. Be aware you are 100% accountable for the decisions you make. This is not a choice! Because you experience the consequence of your decisions and actions, you're 100% accountable for what happens to you whether you want to be or not. You are the sovereign authority who makes the final decisions in your regard! By assuming 100% responsibility and recognizing you are 100% accountable, you gain maximum control.
What to expect when you get out of the Disability Trap
When you get out of a trap, your eyes will be opened and you will be able to clearly see what's in front of you - a more beautiful world with a greater opportunity for health, wealth, freedom, and happiness. You will no longer have to choose to make the world's ills you business, or make life miserable for yourself and others. You can begin to make a wonderful life for yourself, you'll have everything you need to do it. You just need to learn that it is so.
Out of a trap you can use the years ahead of you to advance the really important cause that exists, your values, your level of understanding, your freedom, and your happiness. You can have freedom and happiness if you concentrate on recovery. Too many people worry about what others are thinking and/or think the world owes them something. This interferes with their freedom and well-being. That kind of thinking keeps them in a trap.
You are the ruler of your inner world and no one can dethrone you, unless you choose to let them. No one can stop you from living as you want to live, unless you disregard your own sovereignty. Since this is so, you might as well begin living effectively.
There is much more you can have, and it is yours to enjoy without guilt or insecurity. You don't have to be dependent upon the system.
You do have the ability to hold things together
and you can enjoy what is easily and firmly yours.
