Foreword
What if you had 100 days to live?
Ella (almost 5 years old): How many days until we die?
(I was taken aback. I'd been expecting 'until my birthday' - the same question that she had been asking every day for the last week as it came up to her 5th birthday.)
Me: Oh, hopefully lots and lots of days!
Ella: Yeah, like probably 100.
Me: I hope more than that!
(I told her it was more like thousands and thousands, which both blew her mind, and went totally over her head, because concepts like 2 weeks or even 20 minutes, are beyond her still. Let alone thousands of days.)
This stuck with me. A child's wonderings about life and time, a concept too large for full comprehension. And yet enough of a reality that she'd been displaying signs of anxiety around turning 5.
Even at her age, the passage of time is already stating to rear up and smack her in the face.
Why is it like this?
Why are we so hyper aware of time passing, and yet so paralysed in the face of it?
It seems like so much and so
