    Introduction

How to Improve Memory is a self-help guide on how to improve your memory so that you are better equipped to remember anything that you commit your mind to. We all are vulnerable to forgetfulness once in a while, but it becomes a problem when the same begins to be frequent and starts affecting your life. Even if you don’t think it is a problem, it is only sensible to learn ways of constantly sharpening your memory so that it remains at its peak performance even as you age. Following this 7-step plan is a good place to begin this process.

Chapter 1 - will cover the importance of challenging your brain for constant improvement, just as is required when you want to build your muscles. It will give ways in which one can incorporate the same in their day to day lives. It borrows from the ‘use it or lose it’ principle.

Chapter 2 - will look into the connection between physical exercise and a person’s mental well-being. Not only will it cover the health benefits of the same, but it will also provide the specific recommended physical exercises that are helpful to the brain and memory in particular.

Chapter 3 - will tackle the importance of having adequate rest and sleep with regards to memory. It will also recommend a number of useful practices on the issue.

Chapter 4 - will make a connection between stress and memory impairment and provide ways to prevent or minimize the same.

Chapter 5 - will highlight the importance of proper dieting with regard to memory. It will provide some useful dos and don’ts on the matter.

Chapter 6 - will delve into the specific practices that one can use in any given situation when they want to recall it in the future easily.

Chapter 7 - will explain what mnemonics are and explain some of the many mnemonic devices that are at anyone’s disposal. In addition, it will give relevant examples for each one of them so as to teach readers how to use them.

There are plenty of guides on this subject on the market, thanks again for choosing this one! Every effort was made to ensure it is full of as much useful information as possible; please enjoy it!

Chapter 1: Step 1 – Regular Mental Workout

It is true, in many cases, that practice makes better if not perfect. The rare ones are such as when you have a bad knee and go against your doctor’s recommendation for rest. Most others are positive. Examples are if you want to excel in a certain topic or discipline in school. Even if you believe that you are already good at it, you need to practice constantly so as not to lose your sharp edge. If you are an athlete soaring high in your career, it will be the death of your career if you stopped practicing as hard as you did before. This is because you will soon be surpassed and replaced by others. Given that those at the zeniths of their zones need to exercise hard to retain their already glowing positions, just how hard must those who try to get their work?

Your brain requires regular practice to function optimally. Neuroplasticity refers to the brain’s ability to adapt to whatever it regularly does. Neural pathways are formed for every repetitive action, so it is in your best interest to ensure that the new ones that are being formed serve you best. For example, if you wish to become an accomplished writer, write regularly, and with time, you will realize your dreams. It is obvious that you will make mistakes at the beginning, but repetitive action and corrections on your part will create new neural paths in your brain on how to do it. For instance, with constant practice, you will realize that proper preparation is critical, not only for the timely delivery but also for the quality of your work. From then on, it will become clockwork.

So, what is one to do when the goal is to foster their memory? The same goes for this issue. The answer is to practice. Challenge your brain to constantly try to recall various things. Memory, for both short and long-term, is mostly a sub-conscious thing. You do not go around remembering everything in your conscious mind. Was this the case, we would all no doubt be overwhelmed by the information we carry around consciously. Rather, most information that is not actively being used is stored in the subconscious and is only retrieved upon requirement. Therefore, the trick of memory fostering lies in training your sub-conscious to get used to it. Create new neural pathways that will help you do just that. The answer is to try and remember. You may ask just how to do that when life itself calls for remembrance in almost everything we do. Well, try and do it consciously for a change.

    Conscious Memory Training

As stated, memory is largely dependent on your subconscious mind. We all have been in that situation where you are asked something you think you have no prior knowledge of, but give the answer all the same. Not only do you give the answer, but you also do it with a certain conviction that you are right. It is because your answer was embedded somewhere in your subconscious, and it only needed a little trigger to get it out. Note that whatever you keep in your subconscious must have, at least, at the point of learning, gone through your conscious mind. This section aims to make you nurture the receptivity of your conscious mind so that anything that goes through it to your subconscious mind will be easily retrievable.

    Consciously Memorize Names

This may not sound like much since it appears to be everyone’s daily requirement. However, you will be surprised at how little attention people pay to names, and how soon they forget them. Were you ever in a situation where someone introduced themselves to you, then in the course of your conversation, you find yourself trying hard to remember their name in a vain effort of averting an awkward situation? This is because you probably did not pay attention to their names and therefore ended up forgetting sooner rather than later.

If you wish to become better at recalling names of people, you first need to do it consciously, while every time is ensuring that you test yourself. Do not beat yourself up if you fail, since this may be expected at first; you will get better with time. For instance, a good way to do this is such as when you are watching a movie. As the show progresses, try to commit to memory all the names of characters, both the main and the supporting ones. This, of course, will be rather challenging, particularly with regards to some of the more insignificant characters in the movie.

The good thing about this is the end of every movie provides you with a unique opportunity to test yourself. This is when you get to match the stage names you memorized to the real names of the actors. You may not do very well at your first try, but with constant practice, you will get better at it. Before you know it, memorization will come naturally to you, and even without trying so hard consciously, you will find that you are able to remember most of them by simply sitting through a movie.

Get into the Habit of Memorizing the Things You Read or Hear

Apart from memorizing names, it is a great mental workout practice to actively commit to memory and try to recall everything that you read or hear. This is particularly helpful in many situations. Examples are such as; being able to recall what you read will be very helpful to someone who is trying to study something, mastering this will save you a lot of time as a student where you have to go back every time to re-read what you just read, memorizing what you hear is very useful in conversations, and particularly in debates.

It is obvious that it is difficult to memorize everything that you read. For example, it may make very little sense trying to cram a newspaper article or a novel. Trying to do this will eat up so much of your time, and the chances of succeeding are slim at best, even for those people with the best memory capacities. The
