Photographic Memory - Travis O'Ryan

Introduction

Can you imagine how much more you would accomplish if you had a photographic memory? Well, I can confidently reply with an emphatic So much. To begin with, an improved memory means being able to learn things faster. You will be able to retain more information and will be more productive as a result.

This book is a practical guide to furnish you with beginner and advanced memory improving strategies and techniques. Memory improvement has a lot of benefits for better mental performance and for success. Everything you learn and every experience you can relay back is all dependent on the memory process; without memory you cannot learn or remember a thing!

Memory is essentially the process of gathering information from our experiences: visual, hearing, and by touch, storing this information, and later retrieving it when needed. Therefore, it goes without saying that an improved memory leads to an improvement of life.

Memory is the basis of intelligence and knowledge – no memory, no knowledge or intelligence.

Many of us struggle with memory and have a problem remembering things; we can barely remember a sibling’s birthday, the name of someone we met at a professional networking dinner last week, where we kept a new pair of socks bought yesterday, where we left the car keys, what we learned in science class last month, and the list goes on and on.

The good news is that no matter how ‘bad’ your memory is, it can be made better. The key thing to remember is that memory is simply a skill and, like all skills, it is honed through learning and constant learning at that. Photographic memory and memory enhancement can be learned through training exercises which we shall discuss at length in this book.

The people with remarkable abilities of memory who can recall sequences of numbers, remember card sequences or even chess master are nothing less than the manifestation of enhanced memory skills at work and you can be one of them. These abilities displayed by these people are a result of many hours of practice in memory improvement to the point where it is a part of them.

Photographic memory is generally used to describe people who can recall most of what they have looked at once or twice, but in our case, we shall use it to refer to most all sensory memory because these memory improvement techniques we shall discuss here are applicable to memorizing anything you want.

We shall also look at different aspects of memory improvement including the benefits of a photographic memory, the different methods of photographic memory, practical uses of memory improvement, beginner and advanced techniques for memory improvement, and the daily hacks you can use to improve your memory. Further, we shall look at the various hacks you can use to help you remember virtually any amount of information you want to. When you master these techniques and are able to use them effectively, you can consider yourself to have a photographic memory.

Photographic memory is technically called Eidetic Memory which refers to the abilities exhibited by high-functioning people and some savants who are able to recall unbelievable quantities of information on cue. These are the kind of people who will look at an image they have never seen before for a very short time, say 30 seconds, and the describe in detail what is in the picture they have seen for the first time for less than a minute!

Even more interesting, this ability is found in virtually every child who is below 6 years of age but seems to be lost after that age, which also happens to be the time when we start thinking abstractly. So, it seems we lose our photographic memory abilities as we grow older. This will give you the clues to get this invaluable ability back, no matter how old you are or how forgetful you may think you are.

Have you ever questioned why you can run into somebody and remember his or her name while run into another but cannot? How about why you cannot seem to remember where you place the car keys? Both of these questions and many others which may be lingering in your head will be answered in this book. Memory is an integral and critical part of our lives, how we interact, what we know and, therefore, who we are.

It is sad that as we ‘develop’ we seem to be losing our ability to maximize the capabilities of our brains, when in fact, one would think the opposite would be true.

There is no better time for memory improvement than in this digital age where everything is available on the web and virtually every answer you may want can be searched for on Google. Some have even questioned whether there is a need for memory improvement if we have Google, however, you must know that Google answers cannot beat the knowledge memorized in your brain. If you went to a quiz completion with your phone and competed against someone with mental knowledge and memory of the subjects, you will never beat them!

What is Memory?

"W e don’t remember days, we remember moments." - Cesare Pavese

Memory is a very important aspect of our lives for processing and remembering information that we acquire on a daily basis. Each one of us depend on and use memory to perform various tasks, to remember and to store information.

Have you ever wondered what memory is?

Memory can be defined as a complex brain or mental process which is responsible for the acquisition, storage, and retrieval of information. It is essentially the ability to be able to register information, keep the information registered, and recall it later when you need it. The simplest way of thinking about memory is to take yourself back to the classroom setting where your teacher feeds you information which you are required to learn (retain) and later recall when you are sitting for your exams, for life skills, or for professional use.

It is the totality of what we can recall and is also critical to learning new things and adapting to current situations according to what we have learned in the past. Memory is responsible for you recalling past actions or events, experiences, habits, or skills. As much as memory goes hand in hand with learning, pretty much intertwined, they are distinct abilities.

To answer the question at the top of our introduction, memory can be stripped down to three main things:

Encoding or inscription of information in the mind for easy storage
