Introduction
Everything you do or not able to do in life is a direct result of your ability to remember to do or not do it —Kam Knight
Memory is vital.
It is more vital than you imagine.
In fact, many of your struggles in life stem from poor memory. When you can’t remember a fact, goal, or solution, you can’t act on or do anything with it.
I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase history repeats itself? Well, history repeats itself in our own lives as we’re constantly doing the same things over and over and making the same mistakes over and over, and it all comes down to forgetting.
Unfortunately, many live like this, constantly forgetting valuable information coming their way. Most of the advice or solutions you’re seeking, you’ve already come across…plenty of times. You simply forgot you did or what it was!
Given the role memory plays, it is important to enhance it. In today’s fast-paced, information-reliant society, memory defines your ability to prevail, whether in school, work, or life. Without a strong memory, you will struggle at every turn.
The good news is that memory is made, not born. Like any muscle, the more it is exercised, the stronger it gets. On the other hand, the more it is neglected, the worse it gets.
Like exercise, however, improving memory requires using the right techniques and in the right way. It doesn’t matter who you are, where you come from, or your status in life, by employing the right methods, you can enhance your memory in ways you never thought possible, and as a result, achieve things you never thought possible.
That’s the purpose of this book. It presents creative, yet practical tips and techniques to sharpen and refine your memory. Rather than relying on the happy accident of involuntary memory, you will gain complete control of what sticks in your mind and have easier access once in there.
Now, there are no shortage of memory books on the market today. The problem is that they require the use of highly technical systems, so in order to remember something simple, you need to learn, understand, and apply a complicated set of instructions.
Doing so can be tedious and time-consuming. Often, the system is useful only for a handful of situations, such as remembering names or lists, but falls short in critical areas such as instructions and procedures.
This book takes a completely different approach to memory improvement. It offers techniques that are easy to learn, and more importantly, easy to apply. They don’t require wasting time learning difficult systems, but instead, work with the natural way the brain likes to take in, process, and store information.
The result is, you spend less time trying to remember difficult systems, and more time remembering the information you need.
What’s Inside
This book is broken into 3 sections, and each section is broken further into chapters, with each chapter discussing an important aspect of memory.
Section I—begins with principles. It introduces important facts to know about memory. Once you understand the principles, you will understand why the techniques are so important. Once you understand the principles, you will be encouraged to use the techniques.
Section II—discusses techniques. It presents 10 effective and time-tested methods to quickly accelerate your ability to learn, comprehend, and retain information. This section will not only discuss what the techniques are, but why they are so useful and the proper ways to use them.
Section III—covers application. It shows you how to apply the techniques to remember everything from names, dates, facts, and directions to lists, procedures, processes, and songs. It is in this section where the memory enhancing tips lie, so be patient with Sections I & II as they build the foundation for the instructions here.
As the book’s title suggests, the instructions are easy to understand and simple to apply, so if you are ready, let’s get started!

SECTION I—PRINCIPLES
Principle 1—Don’t Rely on Your Memory
I’ve forgotten more than you’ll ever know —Bob Dylan
Several years ago, I was on the Greek Island of Santorini. The island consistently ranks as a top 5 destination in the world, and for good reason. The views and sunsets are stunning, especially in the town of Oia.
In the town, I met a friend with whom I was admiring the sunset. While everyone was passionately taking photos to remember the moment, he wasn’t.
In my curious nature, I asked him why aren’t you taking any photos?
His response, ‘…because I don’t want to ruin the moment.’
To which I replied, what good is not ruining the moment if you will not remember it?
He assured me he couldn’t possibly forget something so spectacular.
Several months later, we were chatting about our time on the island. I said hey, remember that amazing sunset in Oia?
He responded with a confused "No." He not only forgot what the sunset looked like, but forgot it altogether.
This brings up the most important principle of memory, don’t rely on your natural mental processes to remember information.
Studies after studies show that as humans, we forget up to 80% of what we hear, see, and learn, within a few hours of hearing, seeing, and learning it. This is not within the first few months, weeks, or even days, but the first few hours.
To illustrate, in 1885, Herman Ebbinghaus developed and published the concept of the forgetting curve. The curve shows how quickly information is lost if no effort is made to retain it.
image-placeholderLooking at the curve, every hour that goes by, retention drops exponentially. By the end of the day, the majority of the information is lost. Ebbinghaus’ experiment has been repeated over and over the last 100 years, and the results are always the same. The forgetting curve has stood the test of time.
What’s more, we rely on our memory to remember much more than that. We will have a great idea, come across valuable advice, or hear a painfully obvious fact and think that it’s just too great, valuable, or obvious to forget.
But just like my friend, sure enough, we forget.
Then, we do it again!
We’ll come across an even greater idea, more important instruction, or more painfully obvious fact, and think that this time, it’s even more great, important, and obvious to forget.
And we forget again!
Not only do we forget the thought or idea, but we forget we had one in the first place. We forget that we forgot. It’s simply gone. It’s as if we never received it.
It’s a tragedy because we can spend a lot of time reading a book, listening to a lecture, or learning a life lesson, and lose it as if we never read the book, heard the lecture, or learned the lesson.
Reasons for Forgetting
Why do we forget so much so quickly?
Well, the mind is built to forget. That’s right, your mind is designed to make you forget, and it is actively working to make you forget.
You’re probably wondering, how could that be, why would my own mind make me forget?
There are many reasons and advantages to forgetting.
1. Not Useful
First and foremost, majority of the information you come across day-to-day is not useful for the long term. It’s useful only in the moment.
For instance, do you remember:
• Which sock you put on first 2 Tuesdays ago?
• All the places you put down your cup when drinking coffee 3 Wednesdays ago?
• How long it took to drive to dinner 4 Fridays ago?
Probably not! Such information is not helpful, so the mind discards it
