Breaking the Power of Superstition - Héctor Santos
Preface
Please note that my purpose in writing this book is not to glorify the devil or the kingdom of darkness. Actually, my purpose is to equip the saints in truth and to expand the gospel of Jesus Christ. However, we are admonished to expose the realm of darkness for its lies and fraudulent a ctivities.
And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them (Ephesians 5:11 NKJV).
What if I told you that there may be something in your life that is sabotaging your walk with the Lord? And that this something
is an area where the enemy is empowered to bring about his destructive schemes against you. Would you want to know what it is? Would you do what is necessary to rid your life of that unwanted baggage?
Many of God’s children are unaware that they have been carrying around baggage that has left them vulnerable to demonic powers. We have all come into God’s kingdom from various backgrounds. Some come from lifestyles steeped in religious traditions. Others come from the occult or from cult groups. Still others may have been brought up under atheistic or agnostic beliefs. What we must realize is that a lot of what we have picked up in this life has brought defilement to our ways of thinking.
Now that we have entered God’s kingdom, it’s important to unload the old ways of thinking in order to truly walk in God’s fullness. However, many are not aware of the poison that still resides in their minds, which sabotages their walk in the Spirit.
My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge (Hosea 4:6 NJKV).
This assignment was given to me of the Lord to expose demonic powers that prey upon the ignorance of God’s people in one main area—superstition. God does not want you ignorant of the enemy’s schemes. He wants you fully aware of how the enemy works against you and how to take action to stop him dead in his tracks.
The revelation in this book will surprise you with how something as innocent as a good luck charm
can place a target on your life for demonic manifestations. I ask that you read this book with an open heart, ready to receive a new level of freedom from the Lord.
If we are to be the mighty church that God has called us to be, we must acknowledge wrong thinking and beliefs from the past, repent of them, and be renewed by the Word.
Disclaimer
Throughout this book, I am providing information on various beliefs and occult activities. Since I am writing about it, I want to provide you with sources from which the information was gathered. Unfortunately, some of the sources that I am citing are, in fact, sources that promote superstition, occult activities, and beliefs. You may wonder why I did that. Well, although the providers of such sources have other intentions, the information that they present is factual, accurate, and useful for what I am teaching in this book.
Therefore, I would like to provide this disclaimer for those of you who are researchers
who plan to dive deep into some of the sources that I provide. If you choose to do that to get confirming information, great. However, please use your discernment and be cautious, as some sources are outright promoters of the very thing that I am warning against. If you are a new believer in Jesus, be triple-cautious. I don’t want you to get snared into reading material that can cripple your faith.
I sensed a warning was necessary here. Be led of the Holy Spirit even as you research this subject. He will be faithful to lead you correctly. This book is not meant to create a fascination with demons, the occult, or anything of the sort! It’s meant to create awareness of how the enemy destroys us through ignorance and how we must use the knowledge of the Word to expose and overthrow all the works of darkness in the name of Jesus!
1: What Is Superstition?
Su·per ·sti·tion ¹
1a: a belief or practice resulting from ignorance, fear of the unknown, trust in magic or chance, or a false conception of causation
1b: an irrational abject attitude of mind toward the supernatural, nature, or God resulting from superstition
2: a notion maintained despite evidence to the contrary
From our earliest days, we have all been exposed to superstitious beliefs. There is a strong ignorance of the spirit world in operation today that affects everybody. For most of us, our exposure to this phenomenon started when we were young. Just growing up in our very own neighborhoods was enough to introduce us to demonic teachings that defiled our thinking and lives.
I remember as a teen walking with a group of friends and purposefully avoiding the lines in the sidewalk. If somehow I got careless and stepped on a line, one of my ever-watchful friends would shout out and declare, You stepped on a crack, you’ll break your mamma’s back!
While there was an understanding that this wasn’t actually going to happen, we walked avoiding the sidewalk lines nonetheless. I could imagine what a group of five teens look like walking down the street jumping over the lines on the sidewalk. However silly it may seem, this superstition changed the way my friends and I thought about walking on a sidewalk. Since belief systems affect behavior, you can understand what the enemy gains with a superstitious culture.
People have made room for all kinds of superstitions in their lives and practice them faithfully, just as one would practice his or her religion. Some are faithful to throw salt over their shoulder when knocking over the saltshaker to run the devil away. Others make sure to place a horseshoe above a door frame for good luck. And still others are faithful to carry lucky charms or amulets to attract luck and ward off any evil fortune. In this world, to be superstitious is viewed almost on the same level as being religious.
The Superstitious Problem
Superstitious beliefs have invaded every corner of the world. Across the nations, cultures, and people groups, superstitions are involved in the decisions that are being made and actions that are being taken on a daily basis.
Superstitions vary from country to country. In Russia, it is believed that a black cat crossing your path is so unlucky that many decide to wait for someone else to cross it first before continuing their journey.² In Japan, it is believed that breaking a comb or the cloth strap of a geta wooden sandal is an omen of misfortune.³ In Ireland, it is believed that when a bird poos on you, it is a sign of good luck.⁴
If you travel to any country in the world, you will find superstitious beliefs. It is interesting to note how these beliefs can even vary among the regions within a given country. Our world is filled with many different cultures believing and practicing different superstitions to attract a successful outcome in life and avoid the pain and tragedy of misfortune.
The fact that this is the sad condition of the world today is not merely by chance. This has been yet another ploy of a very clever strategist whose goal is to prey on the ignorance of man. Our enemy, the devil, has no new tricks. He will continue to utilize the same powerful weapons that have held millions in bondage from our beginnings.
Ignorance Isn’t Bliss
From the dictionary’s definition, we see that superstition comes from ignorance or, better said, ignorance of God’s ways. When a person begins to search for their solutions outside of God’s ways, it is easy for the devil to come and deceive them. In their search, they will open up doors that will allow the enemy to bring demonic doctrines to draw them further away from faith in Jesus Christ.
Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers, and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables (2 Timothy 4:2-4 NKJV).
God has left the responsibility up to us to open His word and hear His words. When we walk in God’s counsel, there is a security and safety that we’re meant to experience in life. When we stay in ignorance, we open the door to the enemy and come under the oppression of many demonic beings that strategize our spiritual and even physical death.
Superstition in Unbelievers
But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them (2 Corinthians 4:3-4 NKJV).
We see from Scripture that the enemy works to blind the eyes of unbelievers to stop them from knowing Jesus Christ as Savior. What is it that he’s trying to stop them from seeing? The truth that Jesus Christ represents! The fact that He is the Son of God and the Savior of the world! In order to stop people from seeing this truth and reaching out to God, the enemy will use his deceptions to take advantage of people’s hunger for truth and will keep them in bondage to his lies.
Every person on this planet has the same innate questions burning within them: What is my purpose in life? Why was I created? Is there a God? If so, what is His plan for my life? These questions cause us to reach out for answers in many different sources. There are, however, only two options. Either we will know the truth of Jesus Christ and will be restored in a relationship back to the Father, or we will succumb to one of the lies of the enemy and, unless we find time to repent, will be lost eternally.
As the enemy plans to kill, steal, and destroy humanity, he has schemed many different deceptions. One group of people he has deceived into thinking that there is no God. For another group, he has provided a way of escape through drugs. Still others he has deceived into thinking that a life of good works will get them into heaven. Throughout the ages, we have seen the sure signs of his lies and their aftermath.
One of the devil’s most successful campaigns has
