The thing about the time machine is that I have no idea how it works. I’m not the one who created it; that was Derrick. I’m not sure what his last name was, or at least not his true last name. He gave me many names over the years that I knew him. Huntington, Mabley, Le Fleur, and at least a dozen others. When I asked him once to please just tell me his real last name, he laughed and asked why it mattered.

Call me Derrick Prime, he’d say.

I would tell him that I wanted to know his real name, and he’d give me a new one. It was a game between us.

You might ask if I’m afraid the time machine might break down, blow a gasket (if it has any) or a tube (again, if it has any), because what would I do then? If I didn’t create it, and I have no idea how it works, then how would I fix it? I don’t have to worry about that because I
