INTRODUCTION

The human experience engenders a continual quest for clarity. The conundrum we face is when life feels aimless without purpose.

Our world is grappling with an identity crisis. The global pandemic placed us in a precarious position to examine life from a different perspective. We are trying to figure out what will or won’t work. Old norms are being negated. Tropes and traditions are being torn apart. People are conflicted and confused about what life will look like, what they have been, and who they will become. There is a looming question mark that hangs in the balance from churches to communities and governments to organizations. We are fighting to figure out our identity.

Maybe you have asked the questions, Who am I? Where am I going? What was I created to do? The search for identity begins internally. Too often people are looking to other people, projects, and places to find purpose. You must understand that your purpose and identity doesn’t begin with them. It begins within. The cultivation of your emotional intelligence and self-awareness are key ingredients to accessing your personal identity.

Knowing who you are, where you are going, and what you were created to do prevents you from stalling on your calling. Identity gives you focus by faith, divine direction, and positions you on the path to purpose.

So many people are searching for meaning while meandering through life. They lack direction as if they were a ship without a sail, being tossed from here to there by every situation with no direction. As a result, they become a danger to themselves and everyone associated with them simply because they have not identified who they are.

Too often we are so caught up in what other people are doing that we fail to recognize what we are called to do and walk by faith into it. When your focus is fixed on your future you will stop conforming to your past and comparing yourself to how other people live.

The fragmented filters on social media have us focused on how many followers someone has but not how we are leading those who follow us. We focus on likes but fail to love ourself and others. Society will keep us stagnant by counting how much money a celebrity makes, rather than celebrating our own growth to make more than an income but also make an impact. Too often we are beclouded by someone’s social media smoke screen image and highlight reel, when we don’t realize they are struggling to keep it real with themselves.

This world will have you wrapped up in someone else’s world to become them that you ultimately lose yourself. You were born to be an original not a cheap copy of everybody. Not being yourself is identity theft. Your courageous superpower is in being yourself.

Don’t allow insecurity to cloud your identity. The greatest competition you will ever face is you versus you. The most important comparison is you today versus yesterday and how you’re willing to grow through what you go through. Maturational development and personal accountability is the clay on a potters wheel that shapes your identity.

As long as you have a pulse you have a purpose. Your greatness is in your uniqueness. Nobody can beat you by being you. The power of your authenticity unlocks the door of your unique identity to walk boldly into your destiny.

If you don’t know who you are, people will tell you what you’re not and you will believe it. The negativity told to you will lead to self-limiting beliefs and doubt that prevents you from walking in your destiny. To overcome the opposition you must mute the noise around you so that you can hear the voice of God within you. A warped sense of self will always stop you from becoming your best self.

Our personal identity is often discovered in moments of personal pain. It’s found amidst the mother wounds and father wounds, generational trauma, psychological pain, rejection, and emotional incarceration. We have to free ourself for ourself in order to access our future.

Identity is the self-discovery of what you possess internally and introspectively. Your identity, your personal I.D. is your intelligent design. Don’t shield it, show it. Step out of the darkness of despair into the sunlit spectrum of success by illuminating your inner genius, witty ideas, creativity, and innovation to move the world forward.

You cheat the world when you are fearful to be all that you were created to be. If you can get over your personal barriers then you can break barriers for others, who are in search of the wisdom that you have gained from your wounds.

You have been divinely designed with a purpose in mind. When you realize that your identity is infused with divinity then you can achieve your unlimited possibilities.

Your identity is not found in trying to be somebody. Your identity comes from the fact that you are somebody. It’s up to you to discover who you are. Do you have the courage to be you rather than how everyone else seeks to identify you?

Confusion cripples you. Knowledge of self liberates you. Have you identified what inspires you? Is there a passion that you have discovered? What is it? What are you doing with it? What have you identified about yourself? Who are you? What makes you, you? Where do you come from? Where are you going? What do you want out of life? What kind of people do you want to join you on your journey? Don’t you think it’s worth identifying? Yes, I thought so too.

In the pages of IDENTITY, I will intensely empower you to look introspectively. Our identity causes us to look at who we used to be, who we are, and who we’re becoming. This book empowers you to locate you and unlock the greatness within you. IDENTITY is a journey of self-discovery. It is a personal pledge that grants you permission to be authentically you.

Yes, you are good enough. You have what it takes to soar into the stratosphere of sustenance and success, like an eagle high above the wailing winds that seek to break your wings. Despite your fears, failures, frailties, and frustrations don’t lose focus on your purpose. Your identity provides an access code to your next dimension. It is the lock and key to open doors of opportunity. Your identity provides a unique fingerprint to access endless possibilities designed for you to thrive.

You are too unique to compete and too rare to compare. Now is the time to embrace your uniqueness and unlock your greatness. The world is waiting on you to embrace your God-given gifts and purpose. You are a solution to a problem and the answer is in your identity.

CHAPTER 1

Who Are You?

Somebody is waiting for you to become who you are, so they

can become who they’re supposed to be.

In 1978, the English rock band The Who released a song entitled Who Are You. Throughout the song, the band melodically asked the question Who are you? Who, who, who, who? Still today so many people are asking that same question when they look in the mirror. Consequently, the question comes from a place of comparison and competition rather than completion of one’s purpose. You will always be a liability if you live your life trying to impress everybody.

I sincerely believe that if you don’t evolve you won’t be involved. The evolution of oneself begins with the discovery of one’s identity. The word identity is defined as a condition or character as to who a person or what a thing is; the qualities and beliefs that distinguish or identify a person or thing.

IDENTITY AND ADAPTABILITY

If your identity does not have adaptability then your gifts will atrophy. In order to discover the essence of your identity you have to identify who you are and whose you are. We do ourselves a great disservice by placing our value in attaining valuables only to be void of self-worth. Most people derive their identity from their occupation, notoriety, relationships, socioeconomic status, or social media acclaim. We have been conditioned to probe and ask what do we have and how can we get more? Very rarely do people take the time for self-discovery to ask the poignant question of who am I? Oftentimes we don’t ask this simple yet complex question until everything in our life has turned upside down.

Just for a minute think about where you were born, your background, abilities, traumatic experiences, and triumphs. All of these ingredients to your individual existence have shaped you into the person you are today. You could have been born in another century or a different decade but even your birth was significantly assigned because you were uniquely designed with a purpose in mind.

In scripture, Jeremiah 1:5 affirms Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations. God knew you before you knew yourself and you can only know who you are by knowing whose you are through relationship with Him.

In our quest for greatness we often have a desire to impact the nations but it first begins in our neighborhoods. We can’t transform the world until we first transform our world.

A DIVINE DESIGN

Your presence on this planet has purpose. You are alive at this time because it is your time. Your existence is not a coincidence. It is by divine providence. God saw a need and you became the seed.

There is a thought that suggests Great men and women are only born for the time they are needed the most. You are alive right now because you’re needed the most right now. Your existence is designed to make a difference. There is a divine design of destiny and divinity infused in your identity.

God looked over the balcony of eternity into the annals and eons of a time capsule to select you for this generation and dispensation of time. If God felt that your gifts would have been better suited for a different period of time, then you would’ve been born at a different time. However, you are right here and now for a divine assignment. It’s time to get in alignment.

God strategically selected you to be born at a particular time in human history. He looked out of eternity into time and saw the best place for your purpose on this planet. He chose the time you needed to be born, to whom you needed to be born to, when you needed to be born, where you needed to be born, and with the gifts that you need to be born with in order to do what He created you to do.

Can you see how significant you are? You are not a mistake. You are a miraculous phenomenon. Identity begs the question what makes me, me? There is no one like you. There has never been anyone like you and there will never be another you. Know that you are divinely designed with a unique purpose in mind.

Within you is a divine deposit and rich reservoir which should never be undervalued or regarded as insufficient funds.

FROM PAIN TO PURPOSE

For many years, I was in search of who I was and what I was supposed to become. This is my fifteenth book and the number fifteen is a very significant number for me. At the age of fifteen I was diagnosed with stage four cancer. Not only did I lack identity but I had no desire to fight and live. While receiving chemotherapy and radiation I was not thinking about writing fifteen books. I didn’t even know if I was going to see my sixteenth birthday.

Amidst the physical and psychological pain I was also having an identity crisis due to growing up in a divorced household, a cancer diagnosis, underestimated by people, self-limiting beliefs, imposter syndrome, and depression. All of these factors distorted the view of myself and my personal identity.

Your identity is not in a person. It’s found in your purpose. It’s time to come out of hiding, start leading, and being who you were created to be. It will only happen when you unlock your true identity. Not what people want you to be or what the world is trying to conform you to become. It’s you becoming a disruptor of the norm and being a difference maker who is authentically you. Will you be courageous enough to access your royal identity? Somebody is waiting for you to become who you are, so they can become who they’re supposed to be and it’s through the power of identity.
