    You Are My Sunshine

    A Mother’s Journey through Poems

    Barbara

    Phillips Krupa

    A Mother’s Lament

A woman spends her whole life

    Cleaning up the dust.

Washing all the pots and pans

    Removing dirt and rust.

    Doing all the dishes

    Making all the beds

    Washing all the laundry

    And combing little heads.

She must do all the shopping

    And all the cooking too

And if the house gets messy,

She’s asked what did she do?

Yet she doesn’t get a paycheck

Or a bonus or a raise

And nine times out of ten

She sure don’t get no praise.

    And, yet, while being questioned

    By some brainless jerk

He asks her if she has a job

And puts down she don’t work.

If her child has got a problem

    A psychiatrist would say

Gee, it must have been your mother . . .

Did she let you have your way?

She must be a friend and lover

    And always give support.

Yet when she needs a little comfort,

    She always comes up short,

Her kids take her for granted

    Her husband never learned

    That anything he gave her

    She certainly has earned.

And when her life is over,

Well this will really hurt . . .

    After years of endless cleaning

    They bury her in dirt!

    God Gave Us a Mother

    God gave us a mother

To help us through the storm—

To give us love and comfort,

    And keep our spirit warm

    He knew we needed someone,

To light and guide our way—

To help us with our journey,

    Back to him one day.

So he gently placed his children

    Into her loving care,

To raise and help to nurture them,

Since he could not be there.

    And it’s her responsibility to

    Help them grow each day—

To keep them safe and happy

And help them find their way.

It’s the hand that rocks the cradle

That a little hand will hold,

And follow where she leads them,

And do as she has told.

Yes, God gave us a mother

    So we’d never be alone—

She’ll never rest until she knows

    That we are safely home!

    Detour

My heart is heavy, my journey long,

What road did I take to lead me wrong?

What path did I walk to lead me astray?

What sign did I read, but read the wrong way?

How many times could I have turned back—

But went on ahead with the courage I lack.

    I’m traveling on a one-way pass,

I’m traveling with the lowest class,

My heart is heavy, my hopes are low,

Cause I know where I’m gonna go!!

    Ghost Town Trail

Many a morn I sprang from bed

I’ve got to walk Ghost Trail, I said.

Ten minutes ‘til Louise would come

And we would have 10 miles of fun.

The workers would be out in force,

We knew not what we’d find.

And if the stones weren’t bad enough,

    The trenches were divine.

    And many times we’d contemplate

    If we should go ahead.

The hole so deep, the dirt a heap,

    Across the trail was spread.

We’d get across, no time was lost,

With dirt all through our shoes.

Yet we were sure it all was worth

The pounds we had to lose.

Yet there were times we’d weaken,

And we just had to know,

Was that the 3-mile pole we passed?

    How many miles to go?

    But now the trail’s completed

    Its beauty can’t be beat.

The stones no longer cover it,

    We have no aching feet.

The mud, it is all gone,

Our shoes do not turn black.

And there’s no holes before us,

    That beckon us turn back.

And yet when I remember it,

    My eyes begin to swell.

I feel we were the pioneers

Who braved the Ghost Town Trail.

    Think Positive

Every time you think you can’t, and every time you fall—

Each time you think you’ve had enough, your back’s against the wall—

Somehow you’ll find the inner strength, you didn’t think you knew,

You find you can, and stand up tall, and move a wall or two!

When things look bad and life feels like it isn’t worth the pain,

And you put out more energy then you could ever gain,

And you sit back and wish the world would finally pass you by—

That’s when to find the strength you have—

You can if you just try!

It’s so easy to give into things and simply say Can’t do it!

And when you don’t accomplish it, it’s nice to say I knew it!

But you would be surprised how much you thought you couldn’t do,

That if you tried, you really could, and so very much more too!

So remember that you’re just as good as you think you are,

And if you think you’re very good, then you can go so far!

And there is really nothing that the human will can’t do—

Without just one small obstacle—that obstacle is you!

    My Brother Emery

I saw the new year come that night—

But knew somehow all wasn’t right.

Turned off the lights and went to bed—

Then came the call—Emery was dead!

There was no joy that New Year’s Day—

My oldest brother had passed away!

I remember staring at the tree, so pretty all aglow—

For Christmas had just come and gone—

    And little did we know—

We’d never see his handsome face, all lit up with a smile,

The way the tree was lit up now—

Oh God I’d walk a mile—

    To see his special smile!

I remember oh so many things I took for granted then,

The quiet way he lived his faith, so strong up ‘til the end.

The way he looked at me with love—

For love was all he knew—

    The best husband, father, brother—

And my mother’s first born too!

He made such a big impression on everyone he’d touch—

He was such an inspiration, when we needed one so much.

He lived his live so fully—

He died in God’s good grace—

With a look of peace that told us,

    He saw his Savior’s face!

As we start New Year’s without him—

    I know we shouldn’t cry—

For he worked so very hard, to earn that place up in the sky.

And though we all will miss him,

    There’s comfort in God’s word:

Who believes in me shall never die.

    He’s living with our Lord!

    My Sister Margaret

If a sister is a treasure,

How much I have been blessed,

Because I know beyond a doubt,

That I have got the best.

And since I couldn’t choose you,

    I’m lucky as can be,

    I
