About this ebook

As an apostle of prayer, Professor Fomum traveled widely among the nations teaching the church on prayer. This book is a compilation of the teachings he gave in India in 1999.

It was born from a burden arising because of the lack of prayer among many leaders and believers. It was also orchestrated by the ignorance and helplessness of the Church in India as to the all-important issue of prayer.

The church has the kind of leaders that its prayers have produced. When there's no abundant and abounding prayer, the church has leaders who love sin.

It is therefore urgent that the church in the world and in the nations should act together with God through prayer.

This book is a true heart cry to awaken and move men: believers, leaders, and churches to pray abundantly and intensively.

Read it and surrender yourself to be moved to meet this need of God.

    INTRODUCTION

These messages are the outcome of ministry in India in August-September 1999. They are also the outcome of a charge from God and a critical encounter with Brother Varada Raj. The Lord told me to teach on prayer and to reach not only small groups as I had previously done but also to reach multitudes. I met Varada Raj for a few days in some of the meetings in which I ministered in India in 1998. After that encounter, He gave himself totally to plan, organise and mobilise the meetings in Tamil Nadu State, UAE, and Kuwait.

Never have we prepared so seriously for an event as we did for the trip and ministry in India. Unusual prayer and fasting was invested by the churches associated with us in Cameroon and by many of my helpers and co-workers. And in spite of the Enemy’s opposition the trip and ministry were made possible.

We were burdened to stir the Believers and the churches in India to prayer. The prayerlessness of many Leaders, the ignorance of many Believers and the impotence of the church in India burdened us. We were disturbed by the poor impact of Christian witness after 2000 years in India in spite of the sacrificial and faithful witness of many missionaries and Indian leaders.

We are convinced that prayer is the missing though critical weapon for impact for Jesus Christ in India and we want to stir leaders to pray and teach others to pray .

We long to see many schools of prayer and an India University of Prayer where men and women who are eager to learn to pray can be taught by men and women who themselves pray. This will herald and usher in a new day in India and other nations. We want to catalyse a prayer movement in the nation that will advance the interests of our lord and saviour Jesus Christ.

In some cities, 25000 people gathered to be taught for four days, 5000, in others and 3000 in others the prayer schools were attended by the audience Christian leaders and involved teaching and prayer response by the audience for long hours or days on retreat. And God was present. In one night more than an estimated 5000 people responded to the gospel preached. Many sick were healed and some set free from demons. We expect greater things from the Lord.

We are on the verge of a great revival, a mighty move of God in all the World and nations. New vistas and unparalleled opportunities beckon ahead. We must co-operate with God by prayer and moving others to pray. We pray and send forth this book to stir and move men, women, individual believers, leaders, churches to prayer on a large and intelligent manner. Then His name will be sanctified, His kingdom will come and His will will be done on earth AS IT IS DONE IN HEAVEN. Glory be unto His name. Amen.

    PREFACE

THEODORE ANDOSEH AND NEW HORIZONS: IMPACT ON ME

Before accompanying Brother Zach on the trip and ministry in India in August- September 1999. Many things were already established in my life and in my work. As a disciple of his, I had already settled the priority of personal communion with God against activism and was spending an average of 5 – 7 hours alone with God everyday; the place and importance of prayer in my life and ministry and was spending an average of 3 – 9 hours of prayer meeting, the prayer crusades, (a time and season of praying for many weeks each night of every day), the prayer sieges (an uninterrupted and intense praying for many hours in order to discharge a burden, going on retreats and shut – in retreats to seek God. I was a disciple with average performance in learning and putting on what I saw that God had enable his servant Zach Fomum to learn and to practice. He has been my own model and teacher for 22 years!

The opportunity to be his companion and to serve him during this trip left some permanent marks on me and in my work as a missionary in the nation of Nigeria. I learnt from praying with him to ask God for myself to ignite and set my whole being aflame with love for Jesus Christ and I have known an increasing passion for Jesus since then. My present ambition being to immediately devote eight hours alone with God to cultivate intimacy with Jesus and serve him in all other capacities for another eight hours. My goal is to get to twelve hours of intimacy with Jesus and eight hours of service. An increasing flame of passion for Jesus has remained with me and in me. Other convictions were born and are being worked out systematically. For example: the priority of prayer for 70% of the church leadership… my vision and personal responsibilities were enlarged and my burden correspondingly, a burden that has driven me to increased hard work, and prayer and holiness.

The truth that prayer is the primary weapon in advancing the interests of Jesus Christ in a nation gripped me. I determined to turn the work under my leadership to prayer. I choose a young engineer to disciple and six others to train as prayer ministers to strengthen our prayer work in Nigeria. I taught and prayed with them intensely. We have since started and opened 08 prayer rooms to concentrate prayer on the various burdens of what we are doing. Between April and June 2000 an aggregate total of 1800 hours of prayer had been invested in these rooms. a small but encouraging beginning. We must have ten rooms of prayer and labour to raise 25000 hours of prayer investment in our work and responsibilities this year.

Direction for prayer is provided by hundreds of thousands of detailed prayer topics drawn up to guide those who come to pray. This is one outcome of long discipleship to Brother Zach. The reduction of vision and a God-received burden into detailed prayer topics.

Has the praying been worth it? Indispensably so! We have 25 national missionaries on the Field and about 20 more missionaries in training to be sent out within 2 years God has exposed and judged hidden sin in our midst and produced a fear of God amongst us. There has also been personal revival and increasing love and harmony in the church; continuous provision of Finances for the work God has called us to do. I am determined to ensure that this emerging prayer base is strengthened and made more central. We must pray or perish. We will pray! Amen.

    INTRODUCTION

Iam not an expert at prayer, I am also just a student at prayer. I find it hard to go around teaching on prayer exclusively. Prayer is just one aspect of building up the believer. You cannot separate prayer from the other aspects of a person’s life; the way a man lives, how he handles his money, how he treats his wife, etc.

Prayer is the overflow of a life; prayer is the overflow of communion with God. It is not just an activity or an act, it is a life. It is not just something that you switch on and off. Prayer is the overflow of life, just as worship is the overflow of life. A man in a certain religion was pursuing an enemy to kill him, but when it was the time of prayer, he stopped carried out his prayer then got up and continued to pursue his enemy to kill him. He had not prayed, he had carried out an activity.

Prayer is communion with God; it is the overflow of intimacy with God. It is man flowing out to God, because God has flowed into man. Prayer begins in the heart of God.

Unless God moves there can be no prayer. When God has something He wants done, He looks for a man, a woman or a child and lays the burden of what he wants done on their heart. He communicates to a man. Until God has communicated to a man there can be no prayer. What is prayed is no prayer.

In our day everything is centred on man. It is as if it is … in the beginning man … No, rather it is … in the beginning GOD! …God is the author. All that God does not author is the activity of the flesh. All that God does not author are the fleshly thoughts of man or the fleshly will of man or the fleshly feelings of man. In prayer God communicates to man. Unless our work is His work, it is useless. He is the Lord of the harvest, it is His harvest. It must begin with Him. He must be the author. God is the AUTHOR, He communicates to man what is on His heart, and then man prays it back to Him as a burden. What gets back to God as prayer is God’s own burden, which has been prayed back by man, and when it gets back to Him, God acts. God only acts when the burden was initially His, it started with Him. He communicated it to man and man as God’s co-worker prays. Then God moves and answers the prayer. God’s work is done in answer to prayer.

    Wrong praying (rebellion)

    Correct Praying

Many people make noise, few people pray because many people want to pray their own burdens and not God’s burden. They command God, they want God to run around and do their bidding … God is mighty. God is exalted, God is enthroned. We are the ones to do the running around and God is the One to do the commanding.. A certain woman lost her child and when someone attempted to comfort her she asked, where was God when my child was dying? After a little thought the Pastor replied, "God was at the same place where He was when His own Son was dying for you’’. God cannot be an errand boy to anyone. We must come to him in humility; we must come to Him to receive from Him what to do for Him, not to tell Him what to do for us. If a servant comes to a king to order Him to do something for him, that servant is mad. The servant should go to the king and receive orders from Him.

God brought prayer into being, to satisfy the needs on His own heart. Prayer was not created to meet man’s needs. Prayer is meant to meet God’s needs.

All that is not God-centred is wrong, so in prayer I come as a slave to God, to receive orders and then to execute them. Many people pray only when they are in trouble, when there is no trouble, they do not pray. When the next trouble comes they pray. These people are exploiters of God. True praying has dethroned self and self interest, the praying believer has dethroned personal glory and is caught up with God’s holiness, God’s kingdom, God’s glory and God’s work. It cannot be mechanical; it has to be life.

Now Elijah the Tishbite from Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, As the Lord, the God of Israel lives, whom I serve, there will be neither dew nor rain in the next few years except at my word. Then the word of the Lord came to Elijah; leave here, turn Eastward and hide in the Kerith ravine, East of the Jordan. You will drink from the brook and I have ordered the ravines to feed you there".

So he did what the Lord had told him. He went to the Kerith ravine, East of the Jordan, and stayed there.

The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning and bread and meat in the evening, and he drank from the brook" (1 Kings 17:1-6).

    ELIJAH AT PRAYER - 1

God spoke to Elijah, many false prophets claim that God has spoken to them. But what they prophesy does not come to pass. If a man prophesies, his prophecy should be examined by the Church and should be recorded, if it does not come true he should be exposed and denounced as a false prophet. The Church must return to truth and to examining all who claim to be prophets.

God spoke to Elijah. After God spoke to him God took over to provide for His servant. God did not speak to him and then leave him to fend for himself. When God speaks He takes responsibility. He said that there would be no rain and he took responsibility for directing his servant and providing for him. We live in the age of the dollar, the pound sterling, the Euro, the rupee etc. we can be so twisted by these that we do not listen to God’s directives. The Lord gave Elijah clear instructions. We are to walk according to the rhema of God but many people would rather die than wait on God, because to walk in the rhema of God one has to wait on God. The tragedy of wealth is that it has produced a people who are independent of God. If a child were sick many would rather call an ambulance than wait on God for what He has to say. We are living in a technological age. O that we will not become robots! Oh that we will wait on God!

God directed Elijah to hide. He wanted to feed Elijah in private, away from publicity. Today people would prefer that God should do it in public, to film the ravens for advertisement, so that people would see how the ravens came to see the prophets. But God sent Elijah to hide, God fed him supernaturally but in hiding. God was about to do an unusual thing and God told Elijah to go and hide. We have become so publicity oriented; we are so small before God that we want to be lifted on pedestals before man. A giant rat placed on stilts does not become a lion and a lion placed in a hole remains a lion. Watchman Nee said, If you lift Nee to the sky I remain what I am, and if you pull me down to any depth I remain what I am. I am what God knows me to be, no one can add or subtract from it.

    Jesus said,

See that you don’t tell this to anyone (Mark 1:44).

Jesus was always saying, Don’t tell, don’t tell. Today it is rather tell everybody we even encourage people to exaggerate and to tell. A man does two things and others add nine things to it and reports. How much is there between God and you that is positive and that has not been told to anyone, what is glorious and wonderful between God and you that no one knows about, which will be revealed only at the judgment seat of Christ? What have you decided, I will tell no man about this? What have you told others, Tell no man about this. If you are special to God, He will hide much about you because the world is not worthy to hear about them.

Go and hide – God’s solutions are more valid than we know, the methods of God and His supplies come according to God’s own ordering, yet we keep making recommendations to God.

SO HE DID WHAT THE LORD HAD TOLD HIM … Verse 5

The secret of the Christian life is that when God speaks, man obeys. He did what God had told him, and he did only what God had told him. He did not do what was acceptable to others. The secret of the Christian life is that when God has spoken only one thing should follow – obedience.

    God spoke – Elijah obeyed.

God spoke – Elijah went and did what God
