    INTRODUCTION

    Hey, budding hero!

Do you feel as if your life is more complicated than you had imagined? Have you been looking forward to your teenage years for so long, and now that they’re finally here, you don’t feel excited anymore? Perhaps, you’ve experienced some body changes that you’re happy with, but still, there are certain things you hate about yourself that you can’t change.

If you struggle with your homework, find it difficult to make friends, and have been avoiding certain people and situations because you’re scared, there’s a problem somewhere. To make things worse, your avoidance behavior has probably started interfering with other aspects of your life, and as a result, you haven’t been enjoying your teenage years.

When you were younger, it was easy to report to your parents every bruise and bump you had because the pains were external, and a peck from mom and dad would suffice. But now, you feel intense, internal emotions and don’t have the right words to express your feelings. You now believe no one would understand you.

So, what do you do? How do you control these intense emotions on your own and quit overthinking things?

While I am not promising to make you feel all right again by waving a magic wand, I can assure you that the concepts I introduce will provide you with the answers you seek. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) are research-based therapies that challenge your unhealthy and unhelpful thoughts, teach you how to replace those thoughts with helpful ones, and introduce self-help strategies to control intense emotions.

CBT and DBT are both helpful in treating different emotional and mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, anger, Obsession Compulsion Disorder (OCD), Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and eating disorders.

I understand that dealing with schoolwork, chores, fear of the unknown, and thoughts about the future can be challenging right now. The teenage years come with certain responsibilities, and you need to equip yourself with great coping skills while taking up these challenges.

This book aims to guide you with simple tools that can help you discover your values, increase your self-confidence, change any disastrous thoughts, and develop coping skills that let you sail through the storm.

Both CBT and DBT are goal-oriented approaches with significant long-term effects. They can navigate you through the process of creating a more realistic view of situations and learning to cope with overwhelming emotions. With your collaboration, your fears will pass like a dark cloud on a sunny day.

I’ve always fantasized about being a dad. Even though I was certain that parenting wasn’t an easy ride, I was oblivious to the depth of the struggles and hard work it required. While my son was growing up, I saw him losing interest in so many things that were formerly fun. For instance, he preferred staying in his room all day and avoided everyone around him. It took a lot of convincing before he opened up about how he felt. He believed that everyone was against him, I didn’t love him as I claimed, he never got what he asked
