In chapters 2 and 3, you will learn the recognizable traits of a godly man and be able to determine if you truly identify as one. At the end of these chapters, you'll not only know who a godly man is but you'll also be armed with the requisite knowledge to become one yourself.

When many Christian and even non-Christian women are asked the qualities they need in a man, one of their foremost responses is usually something along the lines of 'He must be God-fearing'. It is little wonder, however, because the fear of God is what will keep a man in check. There is something attractive that drives a sense of peace and security in a home and in society, when a man has a relationship with God and is guided by the Holy Spirit.

 

I encourage you, the reader, to take the principles outlined in this book and put them into action in your life. Set goals for strengthening your relationship with God, and make a plan for how you can fulfill your mandate as a husband, father, and leader in your community. Remember, you have the power to make a positive impact on the world around you. Don't be afraid to rise to the challenge and fulfill your calling as a godly man. INTRODUCTION

The family is the nucleus of the community or society. Societal breakdown, distortion, and erosion of values are all upshots of a dysfunctional family. The highway killer, the drug peddler, the fraudulent employee, the oppressive employer, the violent police officer, the sex worker, the corrupt government official, and the 9/11 bombers/terrorists are products of a dysfunctional home where love and right societal values were not modeled and passed. The adverse effect of this comes back to haunt every one of us.

There is a clarion call, especially today, for godly men to rise and take their place, setting the standards for true manhood, fatherhood, leadership, responsibility, and mentorship in a world where toxic masculinity appears to be prevalent.

In order to fulfill their purpose on earth and fulfill their destiny, men must maintain a regular and consistent relationship with God. This relationship allows them to receive guidance and direction from the Lord and to operate in accordance with His will. Abraham, for example, is referred to as God's friend because of his strong relationship with Him. This relationship allowed Abraham to hear God's command to leave his country and to receive the promise of blessings for himself and his descendants.

This relationship also brought him to the very position where God could not hide anything from him, and he interceded for his family in Sodom. 

Genesis 18:17-19

17 And the LORD said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do;

18 Seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him?

19 For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.

This is the kind of fellowship God wants for every child. He wants to work through us as Husbands and Fathers to model true manhood to the next generation.

This can only happen if men allow God to operate in them, through them, for them, and by them. In this way, God's will can be done on earth as it is in Heaven.

Isaiah 60:2-3

2 For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the LORD shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee.

3 And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising.

There is a call for men to arise to the godly mandate to cast a vision of God, modeling Him as a loving/sacrificial husband and a doting father to their family and to their community of influence.

This responsibility on godly men is enormous and very sacrosanct. You can either provide a near-perfect or defective lens through which your family and the world at large can view God.

We need to rise above our fears, low self-esteem issues, imposter syndrome, pains and stored-up trauma to fulfill this very important call upon our lives. I know and understand that doing all these is not a walk in the park. But we can always take advantage of the healing and grace God bestows on all who look to Him (Heb. 4:16).

Basically, we’re taught that vulnerability equates to weakness. We learn to die in silence. All these only results in bigger problems in our lives and relationships (both platonic and romantic). In chapter 8, we will see how vulnerability is a strength and the first step to becoming emotionally intelligent.
