Gender should not matter in skill based activities like MMA-related contests, but there’s obviously the physicality and the male feeling that THEY are the strong ones, the tough ones.

All 4 of the males in my 140-154lb grappling tournament bracket felt that way and I never blamed them for it. I felt as though I should never need to tap out and admit inferiority to any man around my size. We were all intense and prideful and I was no exception.

Just over 3 hours after we began, I was 3-0 and facing Jeffrey in my final match. He was 2-1, fighting for a 1st place tie. Jeffrey’s world began to darken as I grabbed my own ankle for extra leverage, I arched back, called on a bit more of my power base and let out a small grunt as I felt him try and roll to avoid the pain. I felt what I knew was one last gasp and then I felt his hand on my left hip steady. I had a bit more power in me and I needed it. I gave a final squeeze and Jeffrey’s hand quickly tapped my hips four or five times and I let go.

Jeffrey, a fellow teacher at the high school, had fallen short to me, his colleague (he’s a health and physical education teacher. We also had the connection of graduating from the neighboring high school just one year apart. And lastly, we both had 15 year old sons at our school at the time. But most importantly, we were competitors...Or former competitors now).

I saw Jeffrey afterwards and in a strange but oh well situation, he was with his  son and I was with my son and my daughter. I obviously was not sure what to say, so I just said I had a good day, got the holds I wanted. Jeffrey looked up at me from his seat and said those have got to be the strongest legs of anyone in this weight class anywhere, Neenah, oh my god.

And, as luck would have it, I saw him first thing in the morning on Monday (the tournament was on Saturday). With it being just the two of us, it was easier to talk but we still did not know each other that well. Our coversation went something like this;

Him: I am sorry if I don’t know exactly what to say. I’ve never lost that clearly and that openly, that badly to a woman in anything like this before. I know gender should not matter, but wow.

Me: (laugh) I get it, I really do. A physical education teacher, a male, loses to a skirt-wearing female literature teacher and our kids see it. Obviously, I’ve got the medal so you have the company of four other men and you all most likely have sore ribs and a sore neck to bond over. You’re good sports, I know that society’s patriarchy makes this a challenge.

Him: Yes, you really do understand. Neenah, that squeeze could have knocked me out, my vision was going and narrowing, I was seeing stars and shapes and then you changed angles and that stopped but it slowly started again. I felt beaten up, wow.

Me: Aww, it is a sport and a skill, not beaten up. I am not sure if I should say this, but I knew you were losing consciousness so I let go, restarted slightly differently and was hoping you’d tap earlier when you got that sensation for 2nd time. Master AJ was concerned after my match with Justin because he was briefly out of it, so I promised to be very aware of the danger. Thighs don’t generally come this thick at this weight class. But as far as beaten up is concerned, please never give me a reason to do that to you, Jeffrey, because I’m a better stand-up fighter than a submission artist.

We went our separate ways, but a connection was formed from this rather humbling experience for Jeffrey. It took Jeffrey two days to invite me over to his home when his son was away at his mother’s house. Yes, MUCH of me wondered whether this was grappling practice or flirting since we were both divorced.

Jeffrey certainly framed it as grappling practice and we did some great stretching and drill work before he suggested we go for submissions.

I think Jeffrey forgot just how easily I handled him in the tournament and now with lighter rules, I knew it would be easier for me. Men, on the other hand, always seem to feel that if they try harder and focus more, they can find a resevoir of additional power and they can avenge their loss. We were certainly going to see. Plus, perhaps he wanted the physical touching and this
