The Banana Split
This iconic ice cream dish features three scoops of ice cream placed between a split banana and topped with various sauces, crushed nuts, whipped cream, and a maraschino cherry on top.
According to the National Ice Cream Retailers Association it was created in Latrobe, PA, at Tassel Pharmacy in 1904.
Ingredients:
1 banana, peeled and split in half lengthwise
3 scoops of your favorite ice cream (vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry are traditional)
Chocolate syrup
Pineapple topping
Strawberry topping
Whipped cream
Maraschino cherries
Directions:
Place the banana halves in a long dish or boat.
Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream on one side of the banana, a scoop of chocolate ice cream on the other side, and a scoop of strawberry ice cream in the middle.
Drizzle chocolate syrup over the chocolate and strawberry ice cream, and pineapple and strawberry toppings over the vanilla and strawberry ice cream, respectively.
Add a generous dollop of whipped cream on top of the ice cream scoops.
Top the whipped cream with a few maraschino cherries.
Serve immediately and enjoy!
You can also get creative with your toppings and add things like chopped nuts, sprinkles, or caramel sauce.
Potato Patch Fries
These fries, found at Kennywood Amusement Park, are topped with a generous serving of cheese and bacon.
Ingredients:
4 large russet potatoes, peeled and cut into thin french fry strips
Vegetable oil for frying
Salt
Shredded cheddar cheese
Crispy bacon bits
Directions:
Rinse the cut potatoes in cold water to remove excess starch, then pat dry with paper towels.
In a large, deep pot or fryer, heat the vegetable oil to 325 degrees F.
Fry the potato strips in batches for 3-4 minutes or until they are lightly golden brown.
Remove the fries from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain off the excess oil.
Increase the oil temperature to 375 degrees F.
Return the fries to the hot oil and fry for another 2-3 minutes or until they are crispy and golden brown.
Remove the fries from the oil and place them in a large bowl.
Immediately season the fries with salt to taste.
Add a generous amount of shredded cheddar cheese and crispy bacon bits on top of the fries.
Toss the fries until the cheese is melted and the bacon bits are evenly distributed.
Serve your homemade Potato Patch Fries while they're still hot and crispy. Enjoy!
