Foreword

I have lived with osteoarthritis for over 10 years and, having undergone a total hip replacement operation at the perceived early age of fifty-three, I wish that I had known in advance what lay ahead of me before, during and indeed after the operation.

Our NHS continues to perform wonders in the most difficult of circumstances and their pre-operative and post-operative literature provides an extremely helpful insight into the operation. This does not, however, focus so much on the anxiety of the patient and some of the more obscure, embarrassing and practical daily obstacles faced afterwards.

Realistically, everyone knows of an elderly friend or relative who has undergone a successful knee ­replacement or hip operation. The experience is not
