Chapter One
Once postpartum, always postpartum,
said a female speaker in one talk show about postpartum health that I watched sometime before I gave birth to my son. Those words made me understand that your body changes after you give birth. This change is permanent. You cannot go back to how you were before. And it is not physical change. Of course you can have your pre-pregnancy body back, your energy can be over the roof, but you will definitely not be the same as before.
There are women who bounce back like nothing happened. They are much energized and back to their pre-pregnancy size almost immediately after childbirth. Then there are those like me who end up tired like forever, even holding the baby can be burdensome to them. And when it comes to their postpartum bodies, they still look pregnant for way too long. Women who bounce back like nothing happened might forego rest. They immediately go back to what they were doing before, be it household chores or work. Society applauds such women for being strong. For instance, in Africa, most women who give birth without complications and start doing household chores and other heavy work like tilling the land or fetching water a day or two after delivery are applauded. That is why people have made it look normal for many years such that if you give birth with complications and need to be taken care of, you will hear people say, " When I gave birth I was nothing like you, I was strong, I took care
