Labour is not about lying passively in a bed attached to all kinds of medical technology. Labour is not about handing over your power and permission – it’s not about handing over control. Labour is a time that demands your involvement from the outset, so that you can help your body do what it has to do. Getting the edge to compete with the intensity of labour is easier than you think. We show you how to stay in control of your labour.
1. GET FIT FOR POWER AND STAMINA
Pregnancy takes its toll on your body long before labour will. Toning up for birth, by strengthening the muscles that really count, will increase your capacity for the hard work ahead.
Join a class that specialises in pregnancy exercises, and start to get in touch with the muscles that count. Fit mothers have fit babies, and your strength and stamina will help you keep focused. Being fit and strong will help you cope with whatever comes your way. According to Dr James Clapp, author of Exercising Through Your Pregnancy, exercise may contribute to shorter labours. Also, endorphin levels (body’s natural painkillers) are extremely high when you exercise, and during labour, endorphins respond very quickly to the pain of contractions if you have been doing regular exercise. You will also be able to easily adopt any position to help your labour along.
2. INFORM YOURSELF
One of the best things you can do for yourself
