Step by Step Guide For Salon Management - Gunjan Taneja

    CHAPTER

    1

BE BANG ON WITH BUSINESS PLAN

    Learning Objectives:

In the following chapter, you will learn

Why it is essential to make a business plan.

Points to consider in making a business plan.

The opportunities available if you want to open your own business in the field.

Young girls and boys are sitting wearing black hats and graduation gowns, looking picture-perfect. A teacher walks in and could hear the students talking about their dreams, passions and things they would like to do post-graduation.

Student 1: I love designing Nails. I am sure I will open a nail studio in the Mall by next year.

Student 2: Nails studio, wow! I am all excited about my training academy. Hiring a group of teachers with me and running a 10:00 – 6:00 academy with Sunday off is what I have in mind.

Student 3: Wahji, says the other student standing with one foot on the edge of the chair. My dad has already circled in a space; soon, you will hear ‘wow cut Salon’ launch in a big way. That’s not it! In the next two years, we will be franchising the same in all the cities of Punjab.

And the teacher gently smiles and pats her back with pride. She has undoubtedly seen the same faces, absolutely confused and clueless on the first day of orientation, and sees how beautifully each one is focused and passionate about achieving now.

This is what education does when it blends well with art. The day is not far when you will be talking in this way at your ceremony.

After your studies, you will surely be clear about what you want to open in the upcoming days. The planning might depend upon your interest, the demand of the business in the area you plan to open, and your investment. Nevertheless, whatever you plan, always prepare a ‘Business Plan’.

A business plan is like a blueprint that will always help you assess where you stand, set your target and design a roadmap to achieve those targets. Turning you in the right direction if at some point you feel confused or wander away from your original focus.

Making a business plan is as imperative as checking the route map before starting your journey to a place or destination. A route map helps you see the distance, the challenges, the twists and turns and the obstacles. It gives you a fair idea of the journey and how you can make it as smooth as possible. A business plan is not just about what you aim to achieve or how much effort you need to put in. It also helps you take into consideration the possible challenges you would face, how to make the most out of your investment and how to cut corners and avoid unnecessary overheads.

    CHAPTER

The plan should include the following ten main points:

    1. What is the vision of the business plan?

The vision of the business plan signifies the long-term goals of your business. It is best not to confuse the vision with the ‘destination’ or ‘target’. This is one point, which might change from time to time. However, it is important to know, how you see your business in the next 5 years. Writing down the vision helps you think about important questions such as, Do you want a single salon? Do you want to expand into franchising? Are you comfortable in travelling to various cities for work? Every point needs to be thought about and discussed. As time proceeds, situations and decisions will change, but the vision will help you stay clear of self-doubts and diversions from day one.

    2. What all services to offer as per the business plan?

Consider the service menu card as the brand ambassador of your business. It must reflect your brand’s spirit. From designing the service menu card to selecting the services to offer, the menu card must be given a careful thought. It is important to know the number and kind of services your menu card will carry. You would surely keep adding a series of services from time to time, but at the initial stage, it is best to simply list down the services and the areas you would like to touch upon during the first year of your business. This will be one of your most cost-effective moves, as the list of services will determine your team size, infrastructure and investment. Some of the key things that will be directly related to the length of your menu are discussed in the points below.

    3. Number of employees needed to be employed

Once you settle down a list of services, it is time to count the chair and beds in the salon. The size of your team is directly proportionate to the number of beds and chairs in the salon. For example, two hairdressers are enough if you have three chairs. Or if you have six beds, four beauty therapists are good. You can definitely not have six beds and two beauty therapists as this would be a total waste of your investment and infrastructure. This surely will change with time as the business expands. But in the initial stage, it’s important to have a number in mind to begin with.

    4. Approximates salaries of each employee.

Once you do a market survey, this point can be easily worked out about the approximate expected salary of each employee. This will help you to set the budget, as salary is one of the major expenses in the service industry. Moreover, ensure that you have a backup of three months’ salary.

    5. Job description of each employee

Not outlining the job descriptions of each employee is the most common mistake many entrepreneurs often make while designing the blueprint of the business. What all sorts of jobs you expect from your employee should be crystal clear between the employee and employer. This helps in planning the number of employees and getting the most work done for them.

    6. The amount of investment needed to build the space

The first major investment is the expense of construction in building the space of your vision and dream. It is best to think practically. The very first thing you should do is to carefully calculate the area and per square feet expense before getting into purchasing or leasing out the space. Always remember, a bigger space might look nice, but it also means

    7. Running daily and monthly expenses

In every industry, there is a budget kept for the daily and monthly expenses. From bigger expenses like rent to the smallest expense of milk used every day for tea & coffee, the salon owner should consider every big-small expense. It is often seen that people who forget to keep track of
