Are you meant to be a coach? Have you seen the term floating around the interwebs and wondered if that was the route you should take? I’ve put together a list of things that you need to consider before starting a coaching business to be sure that you will be successful. There is a very important question you need to ask yourself before you ever consider a coaching business. Do you love to teach? Coaches are teaching and guiding others constantly, so you have to have a heart of service. This doesn’t mean you want to be a teacher, only that you find fulfillment in helping others learn. If you’ve felt the pull or the call toward teaching, the next question is how will you help your clients? What topics or concepts do you have an expertise in, but that also lights you up when you talk about it? What could you talk about all day long, every single day, and still be excited to wake up and share more about it? Because you can’t coach in every aspect of business or life. You can’t be an expert in everything. Even business coaches will typically choose one aspect of business to specialize in because they want to be as effective as possible in helping their clients. Next, have you dug into your own mindset issues? Most coaching work deals with helping your clients identify their mindset blocks and work toward tackling them. If you haven’t identified your own mindset issues, how can you help your clients? You do yourself and your clients a disservice when you aren’t willing to work through your own mindset issues. Those mindset blocks that you start to uncover may actually affect this next bit of advice. How do you feel about marketing? Strategy? Sales? What comes up for you when you see those words? I ask this because a business cannot exist without these things, but many times women are not willing to sell their services. Coaches especially tend to discount their services and become reticent when they are told to raise their rates. You aren’t running a charity, so you have to be willing to market yourself and ask for the sale. Lastly, you have to be willing to be visible. Visibility is the key to finding your clients and one of the things you’ll need to coach those clients on. So you’ll need to be willing to get visible on behalf of your clients.
