About this ebook

A life without power is a life of misery and woes.

A look at the arsenal of a warrior will show you the confidence of victory that he has in battle. Other than the skills of the warrior and his battle strategies, one factor which determines whether he is a victor or a vanquished at battle is his armory. Funny as it sounds, it has been recorded that law enforcement agents in some lands flee into the bush when bandits appear because the bandits overwhelm the law keepers with their armory.

The book Power for Living is Apostle Samuel's charge to all believers to be filled with power for day-to-day operations of man's life.

You will find a lot of scriptures in this book, for there is power in the word of God. As many of the scriptures you can make personal to yourself (either through memorization or, better still, constant confession), I encourage you to pursue it with keen interest.

Moreover, there is a section given to praying at the end of each chapter. The section is labeled "Praying Points" because it is an activity section: give time to pray! The content of each chapter should encourage you to partake in that activity to complete the blessings that God wants to impart to you through the chapter.

    Chapter 1

    Thanks and Praises

    Give thanks

Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; His love and his kindness go on forever. (1 Chronicles 16:34 TLB)

An understanding of the forces of spiritual warfare will show one how powerful the weapon of praise and thanks is. The Commander of heaven’s armies Himself is the One who leads His children to battle. He arises when praise and thanks are being ministered unto Him.

There is always something one can be thankful for. It’s easy to lie back and complain that one cannot see the benefits sufficient to make unceasing praise flow. The fact of being alive and even being able to read this material right now point to the benefits of God and deserve thanks to God. The fact of your mental stability and emotional well-being, the fact of being able to move your limbs and having other parts of your body functioning well, and the fact that your mind considers it worth the while to seek unto God—all these are great reasons to be thankful to God. But you probably have taken these things for granted.

Thankfulness is a matter of the heart, and we need to build up our heart to the point of acknowledging the need to be thankful always. For when your heart is in a matter, you find yourself giving room for that matter in your daily affairs. David said in Psalm 103:1 KJV, Bless the Lord, o my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name. You need to work on your heart, persuading your very self that it is worthwhile to give thanks unto God. When you are able to convince your heart of this issue, the heart would respond to you every moment you feel like praising God.

What can you be thankful for? Everything and everyone in every situation and every place you find yourself! For the whole earth, things, and persons belong unto God; and the interplay of these things in our daily worlds has the hand of God in control of them. Thank God for every person God brings in contact with you—the ones who enhance your progress and the ones who resist you and help build your character indirectly. Thank God for every situation—the one which makes you shout for joy and keeps you laughing for days and the unfavorable one which humbles you and teaches you patience.

Meanwhile, thanks and praises are meant to be acted out, performed, and given by the children of God. So take a moment now and thank God for this information that is being brought to you and for every goodness that is yours as a child of God.

    Give thanks always

Giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. (Ephesians 5:20 NKJV)

Your attitude determines your altitude. David was tending sheep while his brothers seemed to be having all the action. Yet when his father sent him on errand, he willingly went. Compare this to the attitude of the older brother of the prodigal son.

Now his older son was in the field. And as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing. So he called one of the servants and asked what these things meant. And he said to him, Your brother has come, and because he has received him safe and sound, your father has killed the fatted calf. But he was angry and would not go in. Therefore his father came out and pleaded with him. So he answered and said to his father, Lo, these many years I have been serving you; I never transgressed your commandment at any time; and yet you never gave me a young goat that I might make merry with my friends. But as soon as this son of yours came, who has devoured your livelihood with harlots, you killed the fatted calf for him. And he said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that I have is yours." (Luke 15:25–31)

Almost always, our environment seems to define us and dictate how we should feel. You must intentionally guard against this. It is a very subtle molding which, if you are not careful, you will discover that you are not who you thought you were. A positive attitude will go a long way in all things. You cannot be bitter and expect everything around you to be better.

Negativity and pessimism will pull you down. Every day, we interact with pessimists, optimists, and cynical people—the list is endless. Who do you surround yourself with? What do you do when life throws you a curveball? Do you play the blame game like Adam? Do you blame God, society, your spouse, or your parents; or do you go back to God’s Word and ask Him what He would have you learn from that situation? You are a magnet, and you attract what you give off. Positive attitude is like a scent and an odorous stench when it is negative. The right attitudes will bring the right people to you, and a wrong attitude will repel people from you, even those who matter.

Thankfulness will cause you to rise above circumstances. The good news is wrong attitudes can be altered for the better and average attitudes can be developed into great attitudes. The greatest attitude is that of thanksgiving even in the worst of situations. When you give thanks in unpleasant situations, God comes in and gives you his peace:

And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:7 KJV)

He comforts you and helps you overcome. You find out that He is bigger and mightier than that problem.

In all things and in everything, let’s be thankful. A thankful heart is an open heart, receptive to all that both God and man have to offer. A popular saying goes, When life gives you lemons, make lemonade; and like a friend puts it, When life shows you pepper, make pepper soup! Your response to life and adverse situations will determine how far and how high you go.

Your victory is in your praise

As they began to sing and praise, the Lord set ambushes against them (the enemy) and they were defeated. (2 Chronicles 20:22)

Praise is a powerful key to overcoming and conquering. In a world full of woes and calamities, every so often, you don’t want to be the victim. We all want good things to happen to us even though we know it’s a constant battle, but we all want to win. It feels good to win. Your enemy, the devil, is roaming around looking for whom to devour (1 Peter 5:8). View praise as you would a small key that can open large doors; it’s not about the size but about the inherent capacity to open that door or obstacle. Whatever you are going through, it’s not about the songs you know; it’s about the inherent capacity of your praise to move God into action, causing your enemies to turn on themselves and devour each other.

When we praise, we focus on God and His greatness.

And every creature which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, I heard saying: Blessing and honor
