    About the Author

A 52-week devotional for development workers, church workers, and missionaries

    Preface

    Dear readers,

Thank you for purchasing this short fifty-two-week devotional. We hope you have joy reading and learning from it as much as we did writing it. This devotional is not your typical devotional. We wrote this to give church and ministry workers some inspiration while they are in the field, but anybody and everybody is welcome to use this devotional. The devotional consists of stories about how we accomplished our goals as well as other people who accomplished our goals. We even included a fictional story as well.

This devotional can be read either at the beginning of the week, in the middle, in the end, or whenever the reader wants to read. There are over fifty-two stories and messages to read and reflect on. Read through them daily if you like, and reflect on the verses provided. Use the devotionals in Bible studies or even use them in giving your very own message to those whom you are serving. When reading or sharing, open up your heart to what God wants to tell you. Be patient and wait on the Lord. Be fruitful, and go be in His service. God bless and enjoy.

    Devoted to God

    Read 1 Kings 8:61.

After many years of trying to keep New Year's resolutions and failing at it miserably, I have come to the realization that New Year's resolutions do not work in my life. Some years back, I made a resolution that I will stop eating beef. To date, I still love beef, and eat it almost thrice every week! A study by the University of Scranton showed that only 10 percent of New Year's resolutions are achieved, the major hindrance being that New Year's resolutions are not smart in their objective and target unconscious habits and self-stories we are so accustomed to.

On the other hand, daily devotions are easier to keep. In the journey to becoming a nation, God encouraged Israel to be devoted to God. Israel was encouraged repeatedly to meditate on the Word of God day and night, teach their children, and walk in obedience to God's instruction (Joshua 1:8).

A life of devotion is not easy especially if one has a busy schedule. It takes effort and commitment. When one devotes themselves to this commitment, it provides an opportunity to meditate on the Word of God and cultivate a heart that is in tune with God's purpose. I have found it easier to take at least thirty minutes daily in the morning to read and meditate on the Word of God. This sets the pace for the rest of the day and provides an opportunity to reflect on the same as I go through different plans during the day. As this year starts, may our desire be to maintain a heart that is completely devoted to Him, to seek ways to be in His presence, and to use the rest of the day to serve others with renewed energy.

What things do we need to do daily as the year starts to cultivate a heart that is devoted to God?

Which is the best time to allocate for daily meditation on God's Word? How can I ensure that this time is guarded against other schedules and commitments?

Lord, I am grateful that Your purposes are new every morning. As this year starts, help me through my journey of faith that I will purpose to walk in Your ways, understand Your Word, and walk in step with Your Spirit.

    Knowing God

    Read Psalm 103:2.

Have you ever wondered whether you truly know God? The expression familiarity breeds contempt is a common saying that sometimes applies in our daily lives. Staying at the same job for two long may make you scornful of your work and forget the benefits. The so-familiar mistakes children make daily may make you less interested in supporting them.
