    The Concept of Self-Esteem

    Self-esteem and self-worth describes one’s understanding of their value and identity. A woman’s self-esteem for example is a measuring stick for how she feels about herself. There are two major components to this measure of worth: security and significance. In other words, self-esteem and self-worth are based on whether a human being feels loved and accepted.

    For many women, physical appearance plays a role in the level of self-worth they feel. Security gives a woman certainty a foundation on which to build relationships and carry out her daily life. A woman who is insecure feels very uncomfortable with herself. All she sees are her weaknesses, flaws, and failures (Counselling Women, Dr. Tim Clinton and Dr. Diane Langerberg).

    Self-esteem has been defined as the way in which an individual perceives themselves. According to the Oxford Advanced American Dictionary, self-esteem is a feeling of being happy with your own character and abilities. Self-esteem impacts how you take care of yourself, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. Self-esteem is about your whole self, not just your body. The truth is that many people believe they are worthless and have no value at all (Fikile Mekgoe).
