Chapter One
The Concept of Self-Esteem
Self-esteem and self-worth describes one’s understanding of their value and identity. A woman’s self-esteem for example is a measuring stick for how she feels about herself. There are two major components to this measure of worth: security and significance. In other words, self-esteem and self-worth are based on whether a human being feels loved and accepted.
For many women, physical appearance plays a role in the level of self-worth they feel. Security gives a woman certainty a foundation on which to build relationships and carry out her daily life. A woman who is insecure feels very uncomfortable with herself. All she sees are her weaknesses, flaws, and failures (Counselling Women, Dr. Tim Clinton and Dr. Diane Langerberg).
Self-esteem has been defined as the way in which an individual perceives themselves. According to the Oxford Advanced American Dictionary, self-esteem is a feeling of being happy with your own character and abilities.
Self-esteem impacts how you take care of yourself, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. Self-esteem is about your whole self, not just your body. The truth is that many people believe they are worthless and have no value at all (Fikile Mekgoe). This could be as a result of various factors such as experiences, environment, upbringing, thinking patterns, among others. It’s important for an individual to have a
