Introduction
Before you utter the D -word, let me assure you that this is not just another diet book. It is a nutrition program that is designed to transform your body from the inside out. After running the sixty-day challenge for hundreds of people around the globe, we have found that this program works and works well. All you need is the desire to make a positive change in your life.
Ever hear of yo-yo dieting? It’s such a shame that so many people suffer through an almost unbearable diet to reach their goal, only to find the scale inching up (and in many cases, jumping up) until all their lost weight has been found and then some. Then we find a new fad diet and repeat the process. Many other diet plans work for the short term but have no instruction for a long-term maintenance plan. If you go back to eating the way you did before you dieted, you will end up looking like you did before you dieted. Only makes sense, right?
Together, Michael and Sue created the Skogg Sixty-Day Challenge to find the balance between nutrition and exercise and to put a program together that is achievable. Nutrition, along with an exercise program, is vital to living a strong and healthy life. The truth is, abs are made in the kitchen. Exercise alone cannot make up for a poor diet. Going forward, Sue will be speaking in the first person in relation to the nutrition plan, and Michael for the exercise component.
But what is good nutrition? Are you as confused as I was? There is so much misinformation out there, all professing to be the answer, that it is nearly impossible to determine which is useful and which was just a gimmick to make money off of the diet industry.
Let’s face it, the obesity rate in the United States is out of control. More than one-third (or 78.6 million) of US adults are obese. Obesity-related conditions include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer, some of the leading causes of preventable death (CDC March 2018). It is frightening to see the direction our population is headed. The prevalence of obesity in children has grown to about 17% and affects about 12.7 million children and adolescents (CDC April 2017). Children today are the first generation that can expect a shorter life expectancy than their parents. We need to find the answer, and we need to find it now.
Part of the obesity problem in the United States is the sedentary lifestyle we have adopted. Our children today spend countless hours behind a computer, game machine, television, or cell phone. What happened to the days when mom sent you outside in the morning after breakfast to play and didn’t expect you back until lunch?
Our children are sorely lacking in physical exercise.
As adults, we all fall prey to life. Life just gets in the way. How can we possibly find time for exercise with a demanding job, spouse, children, a dog, cat, and goldfish? The truth is, we must find time. We all need movement in our daily lives to become and stay healthy. Michael will address the benefits of exercise a little later.
Through the Skogg Sixty-Day Challenge, I believe we have found the answer and want to share it with the world. After wading through decades of diet and nutrition theories—food combining, high carb, low carb, no carb, paleo, the food pyramid, blood type, alkaline, vegetarian, vegan etc.—we have taken the best combination of theories along with decades of experience and put them together into a nutrition plan that works.
As it turns out, when following the Skogg plan, you will be able to eat five meals per day with great variety. Remember the grapefruit diet? Sure you were able to lose weight, but how long could you really maintain that diet? Finally, when the thought of eating one more grapefruit was more than you could bear, you were back to eating the same as you did in the past. Of course, the weight came back on and then some.
So why did we choose sixty days for the Skogg challenge? Research led by a team at the University College London think they have uncovered just how long (on average) it takes for something to become habitual. They believe it takes an average of sixty-six days to create a habit.
How did researchers come up with this magic number? This number came from a 2009 study in which ninety-six participants reported to researchers how long it took them to develop a new habit to the point where it becomes automatic. The study looked at how long it took to automate a daily routine that involved eating, drinking, or exercise.
The study also showed that if you miss a day here or there when you’re trying to develop a habit, it doesn’t derail the process, so don’t get discouraged if you can’t keep a perfect track record. But the first days seem to make the biggest difference, so it’s worth trying to be particularly diligent at the beginning of the attempted-habit-acquisition process (Rubin 2009).
With the Skogg nutrition plan, you will not have huge restrictions, but you must follow the few that there are. After sixty days, along with an exercise program, you will see a change in your body composition. You will be leaner and stronger and feel great!
The best part is that this is not a temporary diet. It is a lifestyle change that will keep you feeling younger, healthier, and stronger. After sixty days, it will become habit, and you will be leading a healthier lifestyle for the rest of your life.
In the following chapters, you will get an understanding of why we have chosen the foods that are approved and why some are restricted and why water is so great for you, and sugar is so bad. You will learn how to calculate your basil metabolic rate to get a better understanding of how many calories are right for you and to choose the proper nutrition plan that will work
