About this ebook

“The truth holds no lies. Lies are what ties you down and tapes your mouth shut. We can run away from all the things we fear. We can hide our troubles with beauty, but a lie will always catch you. The truth is the only thing that will set you free. I didn’t believe that until I wrote it. In this life, we will all face many questions, and sometimes we won’t find the answers. How do you know the difference between what’s real and what’s fake? How do you breathe when you are underwater? What’s the hardest part about goodbye?  Every story, every hope, and every word have a purpose. Pen against the pad was like me against the world. Told from not only my eyes, but my heart, and now the words are written for all to see. You can not only read my truth but also find answers to your own questions.”

    Acknowledgment

I would love to thank my family and friends, who have helped me along this journey. The confidence that they had in me encouraged my writing greatly. I would also love to thank my teachers from Arizona College Prep Academy for pushing me to speak out and to not fear what I have to offer. I have created this artwork with the tools, love and support I have from everyone. Thank you so much!

    Chapter 1. Life Enfolded

    A Black Girl’s Truth

    Writing words on a page,

lost in the language because it’s the only thing that truly sets me free.

Words that scream back at me though my mouth has been sewn together like a sweater that some may call ugly.

Ugly. Such a small word yet it rages through me, attacking the heart that I call beautiful.

My pen strikes my pad with such purpose, I forget who I was and I write who I am and who I could be.

The ink that scribbles timelessly, spilling my thoughts around for the world to see. I write the words I was scared of saying; Black is beautiful.

Black-the color that most identify as unworthy, dark, and dangerous.
