The first syllogistic statement receives an affirming nod from every mother. The second statement is a bit more difficult to grasp. A man responds to respect, while a boy responds to love. The woman in the girl longs for love, but she also needs respect.

The boy is not an alien. He is a creation of God, and he needs to be respected. The book explains the attributes of the masculine soul, and helps the mother understand and hear a precious and endearing message: I am just a boy, standing in front of his mother, asking her to respect him.

When you see your son’s need for respect firsthand, you will find your love and compassion for him providing you with the natural interest and energy to meet this need. Do not shame yourself.

Respect is important to men, and they will sacrifice love if it means maintaining it. Men and boys are more sensitive, vulnerable, and reactive to feeling inadequate and disrespected.

When a mother and son get into a conflict, the son feels far more disrespected than he feels unloved, and he craves respect more than love. But how many mothers detect this, and if they do, how many know what to say or do.

To stop the crazy moments with your son, you must use Respect-Talk. This means clarifying that you are not using his lack of respect as an opportunity to send him a message that you don’t respect him. You are simply trying to address the issue at hand.

Respect-Talk ignites affection and endearment in a boy. It is not just for the dads to use, but for the moms as well. By igniting respect and affection in her son, a mother helps build a strong connection between her son and herself.
