    Geoffrey Berman is the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York. He says he was ordered to bring criminal charges against a former White House lawyer before the midterm elections. Berman says he ignored the edict and brought no charges against Gregory Craig, who represented Ukraine's former prime minister. The Southern District encompasses all of Manhattan along with the Bronx and six counties to the north of the city. George Washington appointed the district's first prosecutor in 1789.

    SDNY predates the Department of Justice by eighty years. Its stubborn independence is sometimes read as arrogance. Schneiderman: SDNY's ability to take on complex cases and do them without fear or favor was a source of deep satisfaction. William P. Barr was sworn in as U.S. Attorney General on February 14, 2019, Valentine's Day.
