Kitty Carly - Kathi Walker
Egypt Could Be Cool
For the first time Carly could remember, Bobby walked home from school with her. The entire way he talked on and on about all the adventures he wanted to go on.
The problem was, most of Bobby’s ideas involved history. Bleh. Carly thought history was boring.
I made a list,
Bobby said, pulling a folded paper out of his pocket. Want to see?
Carly didn’t really want to see. She wanted to go on her adventure, her way. But since Bobby was so excited, she took the paper out of his hand.
The Boston Tea Party? No thanks,
Carly said, wrinkling her nose. She moved on to Bobby’s second suggestion.
The Wright Brothers? I don’t even know who that is!
Carly said, throwing up her hands.
They built the first airplane!
Bobby said excitedly.
So what are we going to do? Stand around and watch them? No thanks.
Carly skimmed through the rest of the list. No….no…boring…a million times no…
Bobby’s face fell. Isn’t there anything on that list you want to do?
Carly glanced up from the paper and saw the look on Bobby’s face. She realized she was being kind of mean.
Her eyes went back to the list. I guess ancient Egypt might be okay,
she said. Or Ancient Greece. Didn’t they have cool gods and stuff?
Bobby beamed out a huge smile. Yeah, they both did,
he said. I think Ancient Egypt!
Carly and Bobby changed out of their school clothes and met up on the back porch. They walked across the yard and clambered down the rocks to the beach.
As they crawled into the cave, Carly heard Bobby say something about the cave wall. What?
she asked as they both reached the cave and stood up.
I said I looked up that symbol on the wall,
Bobby said. It means to learn or something like that.
Why would someone carve that into a wall?
Carly asked.
I don’t know,
Bobby said. Maybe they were doodling. I draw lots of doodles in my notebooks at school.
That’s silly,
Carly said. No one takes a knife and carves a doodle on a cave wall. It would take forever!
Then what do you think it is, smarty pants?
Bobby replied.
I don’t know.
Carly flounced over to the table rock and the sketchbook. I just don’t think it’s a doodle!
She sat down
