Into the Jungle

Carly opened the front door and dropped her backpack in the hallway. She took a deep breath. She felt excited, and scared, and a lot of other feelings she didn't have a name for. She had promised Bobby that today she would take him to her cave.

Carly felt a little bit sick, right around her stomach. Maybe she could tell Bobby they had to wait until tomorrow. No, she thought, then I'd just be sick tomorrow, too. I guess I should just get it over with.

Carly picked her backpack back up and trudged up the steps to her room. She took off her school clothes and put on her most comfortable pair of shorts. She put on her favorite shirt, the pink one with sparkly stones that said, Girl Power!

As Carly opened her bedroom door, Bobby stepped down the hall. Are you ready to go? he asked.

Carly gave a weak smile and said, Sure.

Bobby and Carly crossed the yard and clambered down the rocks. Explain how this works again, Bobby said as they walked.

I'll show you when we get there, Carly said.

Bobby headed straight to the cave entrance and crawled in, Carly close at his heels.

They stood up and looked around. This is a really cool place, Carly, Bobby said as he turned in circles. I can't believe you found it before I did!

Bobby walked to the far wall. What's this mark? he asked. It looks like some sort of symbol.

I don't know, Carly replied. She stood beside him and started tracing it with her finger. I was going to try and find out, but I keep forgetting.

As Carly spoke, Bobby wandered through the cave. He saw a big rock on the floor, with a smaller rock beside it. That looks like a table! he thought. He sat down. It was a little small for him, but he figured it was just right for Carly.

I'm not sure I want to know what it means, he heard Carly continue.

As he listened, he picked up the sketchbook on the rock and flipped through it. Huh, he thought. These pictures are pretty good. I didn't know Carly could draw like that.

I mean, it's almost more mysterious and fun if I don't know, Carly continued.
