Wendy Witchspell and The Whining Werewolves - kelly Hambly

    Chapter One

When we arrive at Witchspell Manor, Auntie, Mum and Mari rush out of the library to greet us hollering, ‘How did it go?’ and ‘happy birthday,’ all at once. They fuss over Will and tell him to get into the kitchen for food because he must be starving which Will happily obliges to. As he gets to the kitchen door he asks if I fancy a sandwich and I reply that I’ll have a cheese and pickle if he could manage it.

Mum looks at me pityingly and shakes her head. ‘I wish I hadn’t left you on your own. Are you sure you’re okay?’

‘I’m fine, no damage, see.’ I twirl around, and as I do so I see a strange-looking man standing by the foot of the stairs. I stop and rather rudely – I may add – I stare at him for longer than I should because Mum clears her throat and says, ‘Wendy, this is Cousin Archibald. He’s a linguist from Ireland. He’s come to be part of your birthday celebrations and your initiation into the Circle...’

‘Wait! What? What ‘initiation’ is this?’

‘The Witchspell Witches Circle. Don’t worry you’ve already been initiated, remember, Lars and Elisa?’

Oh that! I thought I had to go through all that palaver again and I really didn’t feel up to it. Archibald steps forward and I’m slightly taken aback by his appearance. He’s about four feet with big bug eyes, a bulbous nose, and pointy ears. If I had to take a guess, I’d say he’s a goblin, but don’t quote me on that because I’ve never ever met one and logically there’s no such thing except in our imagination, but I’ve been proven wrong time and time again – so who knows! Apparently, I’m not the expert anymore.

‘Nice to meet you, Wendy.’ He offers his hand I shake it.

‘You too. Thanks for coming,’ I say, and I’m temporarily stuck for words because I’m thrown by his appearance which I know is wrong. But, in my defence, there’s Craven who is part werewolf and now Archibald who appears to be some kind of mythical creature too. Who exactly are my family?

‘I’ve heard about the wolves and vampires,’ he says, quite concerned. ‘Has the situation been resolved?’ he asks.

‘Yes, thankfully they agreed to go to Elijah’s.’ And it’s now that I remember the birthday present he gave me and told me to open today. I can’t wait to rush upstairs for it, but it seems rude to just sort of disappear right now.

‘Archibald is your great grampa’s friend actually,’ Mum says, ‘but he’s been more like family to us over the years. Unfortunately, Wend, everyone else couldn’t make it because they’ve all had something come up – don’t ask what because I don’t know. Highly suspicious if you ask me, but nevermind, we’ll have a ball.’ She goes into the kitchen and auntie and Mari pull me in for a hug and wish me a ‘happy birthday,’ before also disappearing to do something or other.

Archibald says he has work to attend to and says he will see me later, so me and Will climb the stairs feeling absolutely exhausted.

‘Here’s your sandwich.’ He hands me a
