Wendy Witchspell and The Avenging Angels - kelly Hambly

    Chapter One

As birthdays go this had to be the least boring. It turned out that wolves were very much like us non-shifters except they couldn’t function in the normal, human world due to the unpredictability of their nature. Unlike Craven who had somehow mastered the art of weaving the two worlds seamlessly the wolves of the woods were happy in their habitat, and they told Will as much on camera. Whether anyone will believe we spoke to real, actual werewolves is another thing, but our viewers love our episodes on the paranormal. So much so that during my birthday tea, Will shared news that we had just reached over a two million views on our channel and gained almost a quarter of a million subscribers. I suppose we’d be getting a new plaque from YouTube now!

‘Wendy, what’s wrong?’ Craven asks, leaning on the arm of his chair, staring at me with his reddish eyes. He had explained to me that they’d turn colour when he was about to shift into his wolf personality. Maybe the full moon was due, I’m not even sure right now despite being knowledgeable on the subject. The ‘thing’ that I saw on the landing has given me a bad vibe and I know that it’s not of this world. I was about to answer him when mum thrusts a plate of birthday cake into my hands.

Yep, my family were interesting all right and very strange in a good way.

‘Wendy,’ says Craven delicately. ‘There is something wrong. I can tell.’

I nod and turn to look up the stairs, but there’s nothing there. Maybe it was my imagination but then everything else I’ve seen up to this point would have to be my imagination too and I knew against my better judgement that it wasn’t and was as real as this cake I’ve stuffed in my mouth. ‘I think I saw something up the stairs after you had come down,’ I say.

‘Oh? What did you see?’ he asks, genuinely interested.

‘Something small, weird and it didn’t feel good. Evil, if you may.’ I swallow the cake and put the plate on the table that had now almost been cleared of the birthday food.

‘That doesn’t sound good,’ he says, instantly believing me. That’s what so nice about Craven and why I felt very comfortable with him to admit that I see and feel this weird stuff. ‘I’m going to have a look around later and I’ll report back to you,’ he says and then gets up off his chair. He puts a reassuring hand on my shoulder and winks. ‘You can trust me.’ I nod. I know that I can trust him, and he is fast becoming my
