Wendy Witchspell and the Belligerent Bigfoot - kelly Hambly

    Chapter One

Mum’s been busy writing her new book on giants the past week. She goes from one extreme to the other but after the events of last Halloween I don’t really have room to talk anymore. I found out I’m part of a witchy family that goes back generations and I can now see and talk to ghosts. Who would’ve thought, me, the scientist would ever entertain such nonsense. I still call it nonsense until it can be disputed by cold hard facts, but it’s getting much harder these days to do so. So, lately, I just go along with it. It sure makes for a fun and interesting life.

Tomorrow is the start of the Easter holidays, so mum has taken a writing retreat to the family home, Witchspell Manor in the Black Mountains. I’m excited to return because my best friend William will be visiting with his dad to do some filming in the woods. Apparently, Mum has told William’s dad a story about how, when she was small, she was saved from falling down the cliff face by a hairy ‘giant’ hand, hence why she has now started writing it all down. No doubt it will be an instant bestseller if Impossible Ghosts is anything to go by. That was inspired by the crazy events of last Halloween.

As I stuff my clothes in my bag, I look over at the windowsill and a lump forms in my throat. My cat, Pluto who is my best friend in the entire cosmos turned out to be my great-great grandmother – long story. And I’m still getting over it. Even though Pluto wasn’t a cat anymore, I still miss her because she was as real as the sun that’s shining through my bedroom window. Technically, she isn’t dead, but she’s not alive either because she wasn’t a real cat in the first place. So, mum, feeling sorry for me, bought me a black kitten I’ve named Saturn.

‘Saturn, it’s time to go.’ I lift the case off my bed and see her standing by the door. I scoop her up into my hand and put her in my cardigan pocket. She looks up at me with her big blue eyes and I inwardly pray she’s not my long-lost great uncle or something.

Walking down the stairs, I see mum fussing around the house checking all the windows are closed for the millionth time.

‘Are you ready, Wend?’ she asks picking up her keys from the table in the hallway.

‘Cat, check. Suitcase, check. Yep, I’m ready.’

Listening to a podcast on the way about the Black Mountains, it says it is the remotest and wildest part of Wales with glacier-carved escarpments in the rock and hidden lakes. ‘Wow, did you know that?’ I ask mum.

‘Yeah, I’ve been doing research for my new book. Wonder what the glaciers might have once held...’

    ‘Probably microbes and whatnot.’

Mum laughs at this. ‘Wend, you always think scientifically. Let your imagination run free for a change.’
