Campfire Stories for Kids Part 3 - Johnny Nelson

    Enter If you Dare

    Mildly Scary

On a dark night, a storm approached. It was ruthless and happened so suddenly, the pirates didn’t have enough time to prepare their ship so they chose to embrace their deaths but to their amazement, nothing too crazy happened but something had happened—the storm had swayed the ship off the route it was heading towards. The captain of the ship looked through his binoculars to see any approaching danger only to realize that the ship was almost hitting a huge iceberg.

An Iceberg! Iceberg! We need to jump off the Ship, we are about to hit an iceberg! He warned.

As the crew looked over to the other side, they saw nothing but a rocky beach. They hurriedly jumped off the giant iron ship and swam to the other side.

No sooner had they arrived at the other side, the giant ship hit the Iceberg and got destroyed.

Now, there was no way to go back home, and if they did they were already labeled as criminals since they were pirates and would serve a jail sentence. Also, all the food was destroyed on the ship. The pirates didn’t know how they were going to survive this horrible ordeal.

The next day, the sun rose brightly just as any other day. The crew woke the captain up and asked him how they were going to survive.

The captain was a selfish man and said, Every man should fend for himself.

Despite the captain’s suggestion, the crew decided to stick together during a hard time to make it a bit easier. They hoped another pirate’s ship would approach and they would all aboard and leave to safety and have access to basic needs but that didn’t happen, the hours became days and the days became months.

Through each passing day, the crew grew weary and tired.

The rocky island was hard to survive in because of the scorching sun during the day. The nearby caves also tortured the crew members.

Sometimes, when the members failed to find food for the day due to the unforgiving sun, the most heavenly smell of delicious homemade bread would fill the air.

Each time some crew members begged to be let into the cave, but nothing happened, the lovely odor would suddenly die down.

On other days, when the members were sad, they could hear laughter and good music as if there was a wonderful party in full swing in the cave.

The party sounds fun! I wish we could be invited. One crew member said.

The cave is haunted! Those are spirits of dead pirates—what you’ll all be if we don’t get out of this place as soon as possible. Another member added.

What if there’s gold inside the cave? I mean, they have good food! They have regular parties? Another member said.

Since the captain was a greedy and selfish man, he foresaw an opportunity to gain more gold.

Alright then! How about we find a way to get in the cave and we all take whatever we need? The captain asked.

Suddenly dead silence filled in the air.

We don’t know what’s in there, what if they are ghosts or worse—creatures we aren’t aware of? A crew member asked in anguish.

The captain started laughing and the other crew members joined him by laughing as well.

If you’re a scaredy-cat, just say that! The captain said as he pointed his index finger towards the scared crew member.

Who’s with me? The captain asked.

Most of the crew members agreed but some were still scared of what was inside the cave and decided to make a ship to escape the island even if it meant going to jail once they arrived in their hometowns.

The next morning, the pirates decided to go to the river bank to find fish but it wasn’t possible. Since they were starving, they went to the garden to see if they could find some fresh fruits and vegetables but to their amazement the whole island was bare. There was no food—unless they went to fish in the sea which was impossible because their ship had been destroyed by the iceberg.

Suddenly a cold wind blew from the sea, it was really strong and threatened to destroy everything the pirates had built for themselves during the days they had stayed on the island.

The only way to survive was to seek shelter in the peculiar cave that seemed as though a group of people lived in.

    Was the Island magical?

Perhaps if they politely asked it to provide food and warmth from the strong winds, it would agree.

Some pirates thought to themselves but none of them spoke of their thoughts. After all, they feared the other pirates would laugh at their ideas and so most of them prayed—even though pirates were considered as bad people, they hoped the heavens would hear their prayers because their situation was getting worse by the day.

A storm started brewing, the sky turned grey and streaks of lightning lit up the sky. The crew members decided to try to enter the caves before something serious happened.

As they approached the caves, they tried to break in using all sorts of tools but nothing happened. The cave stood strong despite all their efforts to get in.

The more they tried to break in, the tougher it was.

The heavy rain began pouring, and the doors to the cave refused to open.

One of the crew members called out to all of them and said, "Or, what if there’s a word that someone has to say before entering the cave-like open sesame, What if we have been doing it all wrong?"

So what do you suggest, pirate? The captain asked.

We should look for clues around the cave, that way we can know the words to use to enter the cave. He said.

There were murmurs, everyone spoke of death—they were scared that they wouldn’t survive the storm.

The captain stroked his cheek and thought about what the crew member had shouted, Silence!

Immediately, everyone kept quiet and the only noise that could be heard was that of pouring rain.

You heard what the young pirate said, let’s look for clues around the cave! Whoever gets the name right will be rewarded. said the captain.

The crew members went to the cave and said different words, hoping it would open but the more they did it the more unresponsive the cave was. As they continued disturbing the cave, the lovely smell of baked bread and the sounds of laughter disappeared and the rain began flooding the island.

The crew didn’t understand what they did wrong.

On that fateful day, a crew member approached the cave and said. Please, can I get in and eat? To his amazement, the cave opened. As the other crew members saw this, they rushed to the cave, hoping to get in but the crew member who said please only got in.

As soon as the crew member got in, the heavy rain stopped and the sun began shining brightly.

As he got out of the cave with a sack full of food. Everyone surrounded him and tried to fight for the sack but he shared the food equally amongst the crew members—well, except the captain who was too proud to receive help.

The crew members shared lovely stories of how the cave was. He told the crew members that he politely requested sunshine and the cave granted his wish.

There’s enough food and gold for everyone. He said.

This amazed other members and the next day, they all decided to do exactly what the other crew member did to get in.

Enough of this! I lead the way! Said the selfish captain.

But—he found a way to get in. One crew member said.

The captain angrily looked into his eyes and said, If you’re not brave enough to challenge me, don’t do it! Tomorrow, I get in the cave to see what the ruckus is all about.

The crew members were displeased by how greedy the captain was but they still let him do what he wanted.

The next day was cloudier than usual and seemed like it would rain. The captain approached the cave and said, Can I get in to eat and get some gold? It’s what I deserve after suffering on this horrible island.

    There was no response.

You should start by saying ‘please' A crew member said.

This angered the Captain, of course, he wouldn’t say ‘please’ to a cave, didn’t the cave know who he was! He was the greatest pirate in all of the seven seas! He thought to himself.

Suddenly, the ground beneath him broke in half and swallowed him whole. As for the other crew members, they managed to get in the cave to find what they needed to make a boat, only this time
